Elected clerk at the first Wauzeka town meeting, 26 Apr 1858 (History of Crawford Co, WI) Bought 40 acres 6/1/1858. Sect. 12, Twp 7N, Range 5W, Baseline 46in Wisconsin. (Ancestry BLM database) Fought in the Civil War as a Private in the 3rd Wisc. Cavalry. Died in battle at Baxter Springs Massacre where Quentrill’s Raiders killed 144 soldiers manning a fort in Indian Country (
http://www.americancivilwar.com/statepic/ks/ks002.html). There is a letter from Charles Norwood Mumford to his wife dated Fort Scott, Kansas October 12th 1863. "Joseph Burlingame was killed. Over half were murdered with their own revolvers after they surrendered. I suppose Mr. Burlingame was killed after being taken from the fact of his being shot through the head." Children went to uncles Benjamin and Cyrus, who filed for minors’ pensions on their behalf. Cyrus died after the first filing and Benjamin refiled for an increase -- at the same time changing the ages of the two oldest children to make them 6 and 4 years younger (thus extending the life of the pension). One sister signed an affadavit on the false date for the oldest girl Edith, while another sister and brother signed an affadavit for Cyrus with the original dates. [

Military records say he enlisted from Moriah, NY. In 1830, the following Burlingame families were listed in Moriah:
