After coming to the US, Hugo married and settled in Rhineland, across the river from Hermann. Many of his descendents stayed in the Hermann area.

Hugo was likely involved in the grape production for the growing wine industry in the area (in the late 1800’s, Missouri led the nation in wine production, and Hermann led Missouri. The Stone Hill winery in Hermann was the 3rd largest in the world.) [11]
