Ancestors of George Powell Hall
This page is dedicated George Powell Hall and all his ancestors.
George Powell Hall married Elizabeth Stocker in 1885 in Sculcoates (Hull) East Yorkshire. Their daughter Amy Gladys Powell Hall (known as Gladys) married William Mortimer Coates (born as Hampshire, adopted by George and Zillah Coates).
Commentary
The Powells were a long standing family in Bolton Percy (near Tadcaster). Thanks to Robin and Ericka Pegg for details of this history. At some time before 1807 John Powell (married to Susannah ?) moved to Leven, East Yorks and set up a farm, to be joined at some time before 1816 by Benjamin Powell (and wife Hannah Dewey). Note that sister Sarah (married William Clapham) moved to West Yorkshire (eventually Bradford) around 1829; and sisters Hannah and Ann may have gone to Ohio (both married to Prestons - still reseaching this).
John Powell (a brother of Ann Powell) emigarated to Brockville, Ontario about 1849 and then onto Michigan in 1866.
George P. Hall was the youngest (of at least 8) in the William / Ann Hall family.
There are no Powells (or Dewey's) in the 1861 census for Leven or Skipsea. It is interesting that the marriage between William Hall and Ann Powell states that Ann Powell is "of this parish" (i.e. Skipsea).
There is little evidence of a link between William Hall and Parents Thomas Hall and Ann Footy (other than the same surname and they lived in the same village). It is probable that Thomas and Ann only had one child, Mary.
