Some genealogists show Samuel's parents as David Hadley and Sarah Lindley. The records from the Wilmington MM, Clinton County, Ohio give the date of birth for Samuel as 1821,1,30 [ Date format from "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy" ]. The records in Springfield MM, Clinton County, Ohio show Samuel, the third child of David and Sarah, born 1820,6,24 died 1820,7,16 and Samuel, the third child of Jonathan and Rebecca, born 1821,1,30. [ Information taken from "Encyclopedia of America Quaker Genealogy, Vol. V" pg-677, 564 & 565]

The reasoning seems to run along the lines that the Hadley's tended to use family surnames for the childrens middle names. As Samuel's middle initial is L it was for Lindley not H for Harvey. While this may be true I have found no record showing the full middle name for Samuel, and David had a son Lindley so it seems to me that they wouldn't have two children with the same name. Also Samuel was reported to me as a cousin to Mary Jane Harvey through his mother, but not a 1st cousin. The marriage, while not forbidden by the Society, might be questionable. [ Check out the parentage of Ruth Lindley and Joshua Hadley ] [ As I understand, the Society had to be petitioned for permission to marry. They then researched the genealogy and either gave permission or denied permission because of close relationship. ] The 1850 census, August [ I forgot to write down the exact date ], shows Samuel Hadley age 29, Samuel ,son of David and Sarah would have been 30. In the 1880 Census, June 10, 1880, Samuel L. age 59, which is inconclusive. There are also several misattributions of dates in this volume, one such is the death date for Samuel's daughter Emma. On page 565 in Samuel's family it reports Emma born 1853, 12, 15 and died 1830, 10, 28. I don't have any other source for dates at this time so I will have to rely on Hinshaw and prayer.

These are the reasons I show Jonathan and Rebecca as the parents of Samuel. At most I am only a couple of generations out of synch.

North Carolina Journal, Ninth Month 12th, 1792:
"Fayetteville, [Eighth Month] 28. On [Seventh Day] last a court of oyer and terminer was opened in this town by their Honours Judges Williams and Macay, for the trial of the following persons for horse and negro stealing, viz. Simon Hadley, William Cook, (late of Georgia), John Rich, ----Lassiter, William Matthews, and Kintcher Kitchens. The grand jury have not yet had all their cases under consideration. A bill is found against Hadley: who is now on his trial. We have, however, great reason to believe, that a branch of the concern is not yet exposed, as nearly 20 horses are unaccounted for which have been stolen from this town and neighborhood, within a few months past. Hadley was last evening found guilty of the first indictment for larceny, and is this day to take his trial for horse stealing."

By his father's will probated in 1760, Joshua inherited the 180 acre Long Bottom and the 50 acre Pond Bottom on James River, Augusta County (now Botetourt), VA. However, he apparently spent all of his adult life in North Carolina. His home was situated in Alamance County near the village of Snow Camp. In July 1764, he sold the 186 acres to John McClure for 46 pounds, and during the same month sold the 50 acres to Malcolm Allen.

Although Joshua remained a Quaker, it seems that he did not remain completely non-partisan during the Revolution. In the Department of Archives, NC and History of Raleigh, NC can be found Accounts of United States with North Carolina, War of Revolution; Page 88 of Report #83 dated July 1783; Book C, Page 103: "For sundreies furnished and cash paid the Militia of North Caroline, Virginia and South Caroline: #3376 to Joshua Hadley #3373 5-12-4." (Apparently 5 pounds, 12 shillings, 4 pence). He is recognized as a Patriot of the American Revolution and this entry qualifies descendants for membership in D.A.R.

Joshua was a Quaker, and he and his family were members of the Cane Creek MM until Spring MM was established in 1793 at which time they became members of that meeting. The Cane Creek meeting was located near Snow Camp, and the Spring Meeting was erected about 6 miles to the east on land donated by Joshua's in-laws, Thomas and Ruth Lindley.

Joshua's will, probated 1815 in Chatham County reads:

To all Christian people whence these presents may come - Greetings. Whereas, I, Joshua Hadley, of the county of Chatham, and the state of North Carolina calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, do this 8th day of the 2nd month, 1813 publish this my last will in manner and form as viz -

In the first place, it is my will, and I order, that my body be decently buried, and secondly, that all my just debts be paid, and it is my will and I bequeath unto my beloved wife, Jane Hadley, one horse or mare, to be her choice, and saddle and bridle, and bed and furniture, one cow and two sheep - all to be her choice.

Also I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Jane, one certain tract of land being on Deep River, Randolph County, containing 50 acres, with all the implements of the mill, all of which I give unto her and her heirs and assigns forever. All my right, title and claim and demand what-so-ever, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Jane Hadley, $300.00 in cash.

Also it is my will and fortune that my beloved wife shall have the whole property of my home place, during her natural life or while she remains my widow, and it is my will that when either should happen that then the whole place should descend to my son, Joseph, by his paying the sum of $400.00, on which condition I give the bequest unto him and his heirs and assigns forever. And it is my will and I order that my children that I mention here-in-after shall have the sum of $1.00 each, that is to say, Jeremiah Piggot and Sarah, Thomas Hadley, Simon Hadley, William Hadley, John Hadley, Nathaniel Edwards and Mary, Jonathan Hadley, Jacob Hadley, Joseph Hadley, Jeremiah Hadley, and it is my will and I order that Hugh Woody shall have one dollar, and it is my will and I order that Hugh Woody's children shall have the sum of thirty dollars each, that is to say, James, Robert, Thomas and Elizabeth.

And it is my will and I order that my two daughters, Catherine Dickson and Patience Piggot, and their husbands, shall have two hundred dollars -each family, that is to say - two hundred dollars to Jesse Dickson and Catherine, and two hundred dollars to Benjamin Piggot and Patience.

And lastly, I constitute and appoint my beloved sons, Thomas and Simon, to be my executors to this my last will and testament, and for their service therein I allow them fifty dollars each. And the rest of my children whose names are before mentioned, that is to say, Thomas, Simon, William, John Nathaniel Edwards and Mary, Jeremiah, Jonathan, Jacob, Joshua and Joseph, shall have an equally division of the remaining part of all my estate after all debts and legacies are paid that are herein mentioned.
