John came over to America in 1639 with his parents but his father died on
board ship. From Beard Genealogy "There is a story that this John, who was a
carpenter by trade, landed in Milford just as the frame of the large,
two-galleried, blue church had been erected and that he took a sledge-hammer and
walking all over the frame, struck every pin in it to show what he could do.
This Beard Genealogy also states, "John was a prominent citizen of the town of
Milford. He was married about 1653 to Anna Hawley. She had previously been the
wife of John Uffoote but at her desire had been divorced from him. She was a
peculiar woman, as old records show." Divorce was very rare in those days and we
can only assume she caused quite a stir by desiring a divorce.
John was captain of the Military and took part in King Philip's war. When he
died in 1690 his estate was valued at 1180 pounds, 5 shillings, and 50 pence.
One third of it was given to the widow, and the rest divided among his children.
