Stephen PALMER
abt 1812 in Portugal & Elizabeth Herrington
Stephen PALMER, eldest son of Stephen PALMER & Maria DeSilva was born in Portugal in abt 1812 during
the Peninsular War campaign. He was baptised at St Mary's Church, Burwell, Cambridgeshire on
27 April 1815, along with his new baby brother, Henry.
Stephen trained as a Millwright - possibly with Simon Jacob of Gazeley in Suffolk, where his younger
brother, Emmanuel [my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather] was also apprenticed in 1834. I think this as Stephen &
Elizabeth's first child, a daughter, Elizabeth was born in Gazeley - according to the family's 1851
Census entry.
Stephen and Elizabeth's children are:

My thanks to Renee Pennington, my PALMER 4th cousin, who found the three 1855 Baptisms in the
Burwell Parish Registers at the CRO, Shire Hall, Cambridge, on her visit there in April 2002.

With many thanks to Shirley King, a fellow PALMER researcher who found this entry.
On the 1841 England Census - the family were living in Victoria Lane, nr. Brampton Road, Huntingdon;
Stephen's occupation is given as Millwright, and he is with his wife Elizabeth and 2 children
Elizabeth 5yrs & Delphiniah aged 1 year.
I haven't found the 1861 and 1871 Census entries for this family, but an interesting theory has emerged as
to why we couldn't find them; still working on this!
By the time of the 1881 U.K. Census, we have a different story entirely!
Stephen is a widower and living with his married daughter, Elizabeth and her family in
South Shields, Co. Durham.
Stephen [junior] is married and possibly living in Bedford with his family.
