From "Biographical and Reminiscent History of Woodford Co., Ill."p.
258, written by grandson Daniel C. Genoway:
"Joseph Genoway, came from his native France, as one General
LaFayette's soldiers to aid the American colonists in the Revolutionary
war. Liking the country, he remained becoming a citizen and finally
settling in Connecticut."
From "The History of Brown Co. Ohio," Chicago, W. H. Beers,
1883.--Under Perry Township, p. 480:
"Joseph W. Jinoways, a native of France, had offended a priest.
Toescape the church, he joined the army at eighteen; was sent to St.
Domingo, under Le Clerc, to quell the negro insurrectionists, who had
taken the fort before the troops landed, and murdered the garrison. It
became too hot for Jinoways. He deserted and swam to an American
merchantman, landed in Philadelphia, married Miss Johns and settled on
Glady Run, where he died.He had seven sons--Joseph B., Augustus, Martin
L. (who married Olive Bishopand removed to Illinois), Samuel, who
married Charlotte Stanley July 21,1838, moved to Missouri, and there
died during the rebellion), Lewis (who, when last heard from, was in
Peoria, Ill.), Alexander (died in Illinois)and Jackson, a boatman,
whose place of residence is unknown). Mrs.Jinoways died in Woodford
County, Ill., at an extreme old age. There were also a number of
daughters in this family."
Under Political History, p.484:
"Perry Township was formed by the Commissioners of Clermont Countyon
June 6, 1815, and remained in that county until December 27, 1817,
whenthe Legislature passed an act creating Brown County, and ceding
thetownships of Pleasant, Lewis, Clark and Perry, with certain portions
ofAdams, to the new county. The first election was held October 10,
1815,....
There were twenty three voters then in the township. Their names,as
near as can be ascertained, were as follows: Solomon Claypool,Archibald
Ballard, Jacob Claypool, Stephen Ballard, Casper Core, AsaDunham, James
Puckett, Isaac Ruth, Gideon Dunham, Sr., Ebenezer Davis,Isaac McCune,
Martin Bishop, Samuel McCulloch, Joshua Drake, Samuel Ashton,Ephraim
Granger, Joseph B. Jinoways, Edward Bishop, Joseph M. Jinoways,William
Lane, William Curry, Joshua Drake, James Leonard, Sr."
Under Education (p. 489):
"The first school was taught by Jacob Claypool commencing, asappears by
an old copy-book used at the school, October 12, 1815. Theschool was
kept in a log cabin, built for the purpose, on the bank of theEast
Fork, below the old State road, just where it leaves the stream topass
the Crammer Graveyard. The patrons L. W. Claypool recollects
havingheard mentioned were the Grangers, McCunes and Jinoways. There
were perhaps others from below not now remembered."
[Note: I don't see how the LeClerc story can be true. Charles
VictorEmmanuel LeClerc 1772-1802, French general. He led the French
forces sent to Haiti in 1801 to quell the revolt under the Negro
governor, Toussaint l'Ouverture. Toussaint was captured and sent to
France in 1802. LeClerc died of fever in 1802. This means that Joseph
M. would not have come to the U. S. until 1801 or 1802. For Joseph B.
to vote in Ohio in 1815, Iassume that he must have been at least 21.
This would put his birth datearound around 1794 well before Joseph M.
came to this country. This also causes a problem with the age of Sarah
Johns supposedly the mother ofJoseph B. Sarah is listed on the 1830
census of Ohio as between age 40 to50 (1780 to 1790) and she gave her
age as 63 in the Woodford Co., IL,census of 1850. This would place her
birth about 1787. This means that she would have been 7 when he was
born. I know they married earlier duringthis period, but I don't think
that they married at 6 even then. The BrownCo. History gives some vital
information, but also some erroneous information. The last of the
family probably left Brown Co. by 1850 andthe History wasn't published
until 1883 so many recollections could be expected to be wrong.]

Sarah's birth date and first child are a problem. Joseph B. bornlater
or an earlier marriage must be involved.
1850 Woodford Co., IL, census has Sarah age 63, b. Conn., living
withJackson and "Louis."

Diana is also spelled Dianna according to some information.

1850 census (6 Sep) of District No. 56, Woodford Co., IL, records
thefollowing for one household (household 252; numbered in order
ofvisitation):

Daniel 8 MIL
Louis 4 MIL
Sarah 2 FIL
Jackson Genoway24 M Laborer $500(rl est. owned) OH
Louis Genoway 36 M Laborer NY
Sarah Genoway 63 FCT
NOTE (thoughts that I have had looking at this census information):
1.It appears that Jackson, Louis, and Sarah are living with the
Garrison.Mrs. Garrison is their sister and daughter. 2. Louis and
Catharine bothgive their age as 36. 3. Louis and [Johnathan] Louis both
have the samespelling although we believe that both should be spelled
LEWIS. 4.Spelling of Garrison. 5. It is spelled Genoway rather
Genoways. 6. BothLouis and Catherine give their birth place as New
York. 7. Many of thespelling changes can be attributed to the census
taker in whose all of thecensus records are written.

This is a nice trick. Martin only aged 7 years in the 10 yearsbetween
