He died on a Steamboat explosion on the Mississippi River. Jacob was a passenger on the steamer "Ben Sherrod" that was captained by his son Christopher Greenup Castleman. He was among the casualties killed when the boiler exploded while the steamer was en route from New Orleans, LA to Louisville, KY.
