Francis CULBERTSON; 1799-1800; attended Down Academy; received academic honors (Premiums or Prizes) as follows: Christmas Examinations, 1799, in Latin and Writing bn1; Midsummer Examinations, 1800, in Latin and Writing bn2; Christmas Examinations, 1800, in Latin and English. bn3 The newspaper notice also advertised the Academy as accepting boarders for 20 Guineas per year plus 2 Guineas entrance, for day-scholars for 4 Guineas per year and no entrance fee. The subjects taught were: English; Latin; Greek; French; Italian; Geography and History associated with the study of the Classics; Book-keeping; Writing; Artihmetic; and the several practical Branches of Mathematics. Separate classes of Euclid; Logic; Moral and Natural Philosophy; Astronomy; and Geography with the use of globes, maps, and orrery were also offered at 1 Guinea per quarter. Classes were held all year with four-week breaks at Christmas and mid-summer. bn1
