bn1 The Belfast Newsletter, 7 Apr 1772, p. 1.  One of the many subscribers listed in a public notice with the following preamble:
"WE the Subscribers hereof, Inhabitants of the Town and Parish of Ballymoney, in the County of Antrim, have for some Time past with Anxiety and Indignation considered the unhappy Tendency of that Spirit of Riot and Opposition to Law, that has of late so much prevailed in our Neighborhood, and that has been productive in many Places, of the most horrid Murders, Robberies, burning of Houses, destroying of Cattle, extorting unlawful Oaths, bringing over the Timorous and Unwary by Threats to be of that Party, and other wicked and atrocious Crimes too tedious as well as too shocking to enumerate; Crimes seldom committed in the most savage Country, much less to be expected in our's(sic), blessed as it is with Laws so equitable, and happy in a Government and Constitution so mild - being fully convinced that no pretended Grievance can justify Opposition to the Civil Power.  As a Means therefore to prevent and suppress (as much as in us lies) such violent Proceedings, the more effectually to secure our own and our Neighbours Lives and Properties, the better to support his Majesty's peace and the good Order of Society, and also to prevent such timorous and unwary People from being compelled or seduced to join in like Acts of Violence and Outrage:  We do hereby pledge our Faith each and every one of us severally for himself to the Whole, that we shall from Time to Time, and at all Times hereafter, at the Risque and Hazard of our Lives, be aiding and assisting to each other, and to the Civil Magistrate, in the due Execution of the Laws, by arming ourselves and repelling Force by Force, as often as the same may be necessary, in order to re-establish Peace, Safety, and good Order.  Dated at Ballymoney, 20th March 1772."

Following the list of names is a concluding sentence to this public notice:
"N.B.  We only insert the above Subscribers Names for the Sake of Brevity, there being upwards of one thousand Inhabitants in said Parish who have or would willingly subscribe."
