He was the first president not elected to that office or that of Vice President. He became vice president when Richard Nixon appointed him to the office following Spiro Agnew's resignation. He then succeeded Nixon as President of the United States when Nixon resigned. As president, Ford then appointed ¤Nelson Rockefeller as his vPOTUS under the provisions of the same 25° amendment by which he (Ford) had been appointed by Nixon.
Ford survived two assassination attempts in one month, both by women, both followers of Charles Manson.
Born Leslie Lynch King, his parents were divorced shortly after his birth. When his mother remarried, his stepfather adopted him and he subsequently changed his name.
In his youth, at the University of Michigan, he was a gifted athlete and serious football star.
