American humanitarian and reformer,
he is noted especially for his work on behalf of the blind.
His wife was ¤Julia Ward Howe, poet and philanthropist --
and author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
It was Dr.
Howe’s work that guided the well-known teacher Anne Sullivan in her education of Helen Keller.
1825-1830 | Served as guerrilla fighter and a naval surgeon in Greece to aid in its struggle against the Turks |
1832 | Opened the first U.S. college for the blind, later named Perkins Institute |
1832 | First U.S. Educator to the Blind |
1861-1865 | Member of the Sanitary Commission (during Civil War) |
1865-1874 | Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of State Charities, the first of its kind in the U.S. |
1866-1867 | Active in aid of the Cretans |
1871 | U.S. commissioner to Santo Domingo (later the Dominican Republic) |
