Afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia, he was able to overcome his illness by sheer force of intellect, without medication.

His story is told in the 1998 Sylvia Nasar biography, A Beautuful Mind, and inspired the 2001 Ron Howard film by the same name.  -30-
