chg • PERKINS, Andrew, Capt. [1743-?] – American sea captain PERK292 20C7
He was captain of the schooner Spy, which carried the copy of the United States Treaty [Treaty of Paris] to France. [NEHGR, 85:145ff] Probably, this was one of several copies simultaneously transmitted.
It is to be remembered that at this period letters overseas were usually written in from two to four or even more originals, all of which were signed and sent, if possible, by different ships. Complaints of tampering with the despatches were frequent. Formal documents were often prepared in various originals for this reason. [For example,] Congress ordered six ratifications of the treaties of February 6, 1778, to be transmitted abroad "by different conveyances" and directed the Marine Committee to "provide vessels for carrying the said despatches" (Journals, XI, 463-64). [ Preliminary Articles of Peace: Hunter Miller's Notes, ]

Candidates Work List

This is my working list of candidates to include -- I'm not yet sure if they are related to me! As candidates are eliminated (proven not related) they are marked appropriately (THUS) and an explanation included. They are kept in the list in case future research proves they can be included. (And to keep them from popping up on the list again!) Never discard good research!

Proven candidates' names are marked with an asterisk (*) until they can be added to the database.
