He served (1959-73) as Republican governor of New York for four terms and was appointed vice-president (1974-77) by President ¤Gerald R. Ford. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. A grandson of the industrialist ¤John D. Rockefeller, Nelson Rockefeller was graduated (1930) from Dartmouth College and worked in family enterprises until his appointment by President ¤Franklin D. Roosevelt as coordinator (1940-44) of inter-American affairs. He then became assistant secretary of state (1944-45) for Latin American affairs, head (1950-51) of the International Development Advisory Board, undersecretary of health, education, and welfare (1953-54), and special assistant (1954-55) to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He also chaired (1952-58) the President's Advisory Committee on Government Organization. In 1958, Rockefeller defeated W. Averell Harriman in the New York gubernatorial race. As governor he greatly increased the size and scope of the state government; in 1971 he was criticized for his role in the Attica Prison riots. He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for president in 1960, 1964, and 1968, and in 1973 he resigned as governor to establish and chair the National Commission on Critical Choices for America. As vice-president he chaired an investigatory commission on the Central Intelligence Agency. [after Grollier]  -30-
