Elected vice president in 1848, he succeeded as president on Zachary Taylor's death, becoming the 13th President of the United States. His policies pleased neither the expansionists nor the slaveholders and he was not re-nominated by his party in 1852. In 1856 he was nominated by the American Party (Know Nothings) but was defeated by James Buchanan, despite Whig support.
His presidency was most noted for the Missouri Compromise of 1850, which postponed the Civil War for several years.
In 1853 he sent a trade mission to Japan,
