Archibald Hill (210) and Mary Fulton (211)

Archibald Hill (210) was born in Isle of Magee Parish, County Antrim, Ireland about 1765, the son of Timothy Hill (417) and Esther Dick (418). It is said that he was a weaver by trade. He came to this country in 1795 and settled in what was then the northern part of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and was also still Indian country.

In 1796, he applied for a tract of land. A warrant, the authority to survey a tract of land, was issued 29 December 1801 for 400 acres in the woods near the confluence of Conneaut Outlet Creek and French Creek. In 1800, Crawford County was erected, and the area where Archibald had located became part of Fairfield Township, Crawford County. The land was surveyed 2 June 1802, resulting in a tract of 408 acres, 23 perches. A patent, a document passing title from the Commonwealth, was issued 8 July 1806. This tract of land, titled "Emsworth," was purchased for $32.13. The patent was enrolled in patent book No. 57, page 437 and was signed by Thomas McKean and witnessed by T.M. Thompson.

Archibald married Mary Buchanan Fulton (211), a daughter of Thomas Fulton (214) and Sarah Buchanan (215), on 30 April 1800. The Fulton's had located near the land purchased by Archibald. Mary was born in Ireland on 10 October 1779. Archibald and Mary quickly moved to the 400 acres in the woods and began to develop it into a farm. This land is still farmland, although no longer owned by a Hill. Archibald built the first stone house in that part of the county on his farm. The house, which was built in 1816 with fieldstone and mud, no longer exists, having been destroyed by fire one 4th of July. A firecracker box, thought to be empty but in fact still containing a firecracker, was thrown on the fire, resulting in the destruction of the house. The house was torn down in 1868, and a frame was erected on the old foundation. In order to help make ends meet, Archibald worked in a sawmill for a Dr. Kennedy. He was also a trustee of the French Creek Presbyterian Church.

Archibald and Mary together had eight children, including Esther (406), born 20 September 1801; Sarah (407), born 3 April 1803; Timothy (83), born 6 October 1805; Samuel (374), born 13 November 1807; Ann (408), born 23 October 1809; Thomas (409), born 17 March 1812; Mary (410), born 25 September 1814 and Jane (411), born 5 April 1817.

Archibald died 5 May 1817, in his 52nd year, and is buried in Conneaut Cemetery on the banks of French Creek in Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Mary died 7 April 1845, and is buried with Archibald in Conneaut Cemetery.
