Notes on Aron Emory Hughes and family - He went by his middle name of Emory (or Emery) his entire life. He was 1/4 Choctaw Indian and was born in South Carolina - so his mother, Elidia (Lydia) must have been 1/2 Choctaw. William Hughes moved his family to Limestone Co., AL between the birth of his sons, William C. in 1818 and A. W. in 1821. Emery first lived in Limestone County with his wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and then he lived on a farm on the Giles/Lawrence County line north of the community of Westside (part of the farm was in Giles and part in Lawrence Counties). His Dad and he bought that land together as a joint venture between 1850 and 1854.This land was previously owned by pioneer settler, Robert Hillhouse. When William died in 1854, Emory was given 50 acres of his Dad's half of the 200 acres of land that they jointly owned. His brother, Jesse, got the other 50 acres of his Dad's half of the land. His sister Elizabeth (Married to
Anderson Hardiman) received 75 acres of land in William Hughes' will, land that was near to Emory's farm. Around 1888 Emory traded farms with his son-in-law, George Henry May, who had married Emory's daughter, Martha. The Mays lived there until George died in 1934. The Hughes Cemetery used to be part of Emory's farm and was given to the county for public burials in 1888. It is still a public-use cemetery today.

Four of the Hughes children died before marrying. Pollock died before 1870 and Lou, Bill, and John all died prior to 1880 (exact dates unknown). All four of them are buried at the Hughes cemetery (part of the problem is that the original graves in the cemetery were unmarked so no death dates are known.)
