Desktop Cleanup

Removing Icons

You can use TweakUI (included in Win98 standard disk, downloadable for 95 and 98 SE) that has a desktop tab.  Go to that and you can uncheck any icon that is listed there to remove it from your desktop.  There are some that cannot be removed without auxiliary tweaking software.  If you don't use the DCC, then you can use TweakUI (included in Win98 standard disk, downloadable for 95 and 98 SE) that has a desktop tab.

Desktop Appearance

This will now require stepwise change using the display in Control Panel.  Going to Appearance, you can change the background color and the font style and size in the drop down menu "Item".  Some of these will show a font and you can change there.  To select the displays that you want to change, either select them from that list or (easier) click on the part of the display directly above that you want to change.  Also note, in the "Scheme" window, near the bottom will be a Windows Standard setting which may be exactly what you want.  click on this and then the Apply.

Increase Desktop size
If your desktop area seems to be crowded, you can increase the size of your screen display by increasing the number of pixels displayed.  To do this, right click on an open area of your desktop and select Properties.  Then click on the SETTINGS tab.  in the lower right, you will see the current resolution of your screen.  If you move that slider one notch to the right, you will increase the area of your screen and thus the coverage for the web pages.  Most web pages are written for 800x600 resolution.  Some older screens and computers may only go that high.  Newer ones will go above that.  If you change screen resolution, you may also want to change the icon size to get them back to a readable size.  This can be done in two places.  The first is on the Advanced tab on the settings tab.  You can select large fonts there to increase the size of the icons and labels.  The second is in the Appearance tab.  There is a small window called ITEM that has a pull down menu.  If you click on the arrow at the right of that window and select Icon, you can change the size.  The numbers there are for the icon size and font size for the labels for those icons.

Thanks to [email protected] for this one

To create a folder on your desktop to hold all those icons that clutter or to create a folder where you can place your downloaded files and find them again,

My Computer
Double click on C
File (menu across the top)
New
Folder (first in list)
While new folder is highlighted type in the name you want and it is a done deal.

Just a little comment here, if you have clicked or for whatever reason, lost the ability to change the name while creating the folder, just make sure that its highlighted and press F2 and you will be right back at the renaming stage.
