The Maddox & Swann Family of Maryland

The story becomes more entangled and intriguing when the widow Mary marries Stephen Compton. Who was Stephen Compton? He and John Maddox shared real estate because they were taxed together in 1758. They were obviously close friends. Mary Maddox died between 1765 and 1769 and Stephen was in control of all the Notley’s property.

At the time of his father’s death, John Maddox was married to Elizabeth Jennifer and they had one daughter Sarah Hatch Maddox. Another daughter, Elizabeth Jennifer Maddox was born about 1760. By 1766, John had produced a male heir, John Maddox, Jr. One year later, John Maddox, Sr. died. By 1769, John’s widow Elizabeth, married Stephen Compton. Yes, the same Stephen Compton that married his mother, Mary. What a tangled web we weave? The estate of Notely Maddox remained in control of the heirs of his eldest son John through Stephen Compton. The intended heir, William Maddox, died intestate in 1779. He had married Sarah Ford and they had four known children; Edward, Samuel, William and Ann. William’s widow married Thomas Marshall, his sons went to sea and his daughter Ann married Thomas Mercer Swann.
