SAMUEL BENEDICT ESQ., was born at Norwich, Litchfield County, Conn., on the 19th of January 1798. While he was yet quite young, his parents removed to Alexander, in Gennessee County, New York, and he early manifested that patriotism and devotion to his country which distinguished his course in later years, being present at the defense of Fort Erie against the attack of the British in 1813. In 1836 his ability and integrity were recognized by Governor Marey of New York (afterwards Secretary of State) who appointed him (unsolicited) to the responsible duty of distributing the proceeds of the sales of public lands for the Western District of New York.
In the financial crisis of 1837-1838 being unfortunate in the loss of a large and valuable property, he removed to Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where he settled and was successful in developing the coal mines of the Wyoming Valley. He was one of the contractors in building the North Branch Canal through the valley. He was chosen to the legislature from his county in 1848 and was honored by a re-election the following term.
Mr. Benedict removed to Coalsmouth, Kanawha County, Virginia in 1858, where he purchased a home and remained until his death. His course during the recent rebellion is known to all. He has given his unwavering and undivided support to the government of his fathers, and has sacrificed his property and suffered persecution and imprisonment rather than turn against the flag he loved. etc.
