bullet  General Notes:

As written by Ada Leonora McEwen Bandy : " In 1867 my father was married to Margaret Agnes Hall of Weatherford, Texas. He built their home a few miles from Thorp Spring near a fresh water stream which was later known as McEwen Creek. I was born there in 1869."

"One thing I resented in my childhood was the work that wives and mothers had to do. My father [William Jasper McEwen] had a cotton gin in addition to a farm. The custom was to pay white labor so much in money in addition to their board and laundry. My mother did the cooking and the laundry for the hired men. After the noon meal she went to the back yard and washed, drawing water from a deep well in buckets, until time to prepare the evening meal. After that was over the men could rest, but she worked until late at night cleaning the kitchen and getting ready to cook an early breakfast. "

"I said to her one day, "I will never marry a farmer and work as you do." She said, "My Dear, you won't know what you will do." But one thing I felt very sure of was not putting myself in a place in life where I would have to be a "Drudge" as my mother and aunts were.

Negro labor was cheap and I could not understand why wives did not have help with the house work as husbands had help with the farm work."

My mother died in 1878, and Daddy sold the farm and moved to Thorp Spring. He and Uncle Milt put in a General Store there. In 1880 my father married again. Soon after his marriage he, Uncle Milt, Mr. Ranson, and three or four other men decided to go further west. They selected Seymour, in Baylor County, a few hundred miles away on the banks of the Brazos River, as their new home." Ada Leonora McEwen Bandy 1869 - 1962
