Arthur Methodist Church

Formerly part of the Durham Misson, distance from Guelph 25 miles

From the arrival of the earliest settlers, the Methodists began holding worship services in their homes, and when a travelling missionary chanched to come along, they made a special effort to meet.

In 1850, they began holding church services in the new public school. Earliest missionaries were Mr. Wilkins, Mr. Swann and Mr. Fish. From 1855 to 1867, Arthur was served by Mount Forest ministers.

Their first church was built on Edward Street facing the Conestogo River, and in 1870 Rev. Aaron Miller was the first resident minister.

The present site of the United Church was purchased in 1891, with plans to build a new church on the corner of Smith and Tucker Streets. The cornerstone was laid in spring of 1892 and the official opening was on the first Sunday in November 1892.

Kenilworth Methodist Church

Kenilworth Methodist Church

Methodists of the area first met in an old stone school, S.S. No. 10, on the 2nd concession of Arthur Township.

In 1854, trustees, William Bunston, William Cushing and James Waters purchased one-quarter acre of land south of Kenilworth, EOSR. They built a log church that became known as Ebenezer. First seats were planks.

In 1855, the congregation began building the new red brick church, set on a basement foundation, on the same site. The new seats were pine cut from the Cushing farm, and made by Thomas Rhame, and are still in use. During construction, services were held in Kenilworth Town Hall. Extra land for an enlarged cemetery was donated by the James Farrell family.

In 1874, the Methodist Connection joined with the Wesleyan Methodists.

Tremain's Primitive Methodist Church

The John Tremain farm, SE 1/2 lot 24, con 8, was taken from the Crown in 1862, by a Church Society known as "The Venerable Society for propagation of the Gospel, under the Diocese of Toronto". A church was built on the property that year, and was used for services until three congreations were amalgamated, to build Union Church in 1885. Two were Methodist and one was Presyterian. Tremain's church was still standing in 1985.

Ternan Church

Two small Methodist churches, one on the John Tremain farm, and one on the Walter Ternan farm, lot 27, con 5, amalgamated with a small Presbyterian Church on the George Kidnie farm, lot 18, con 17, Maryborough Tp. During the summer of 1884, the congregations of these three churches met and decided to unite, build one church, and call it "Union".

Union Methodist Church

Through the liberal donations of money and labour, Union Methodist Church was erected in 1885. Land was donated by Joseph Halpenny of Arthur Tp. Red brick was hauled by teams and wagon from Ballinafad in Erin Tp. Official opening took place on October 18, 1885. The resident minister Rev. Ferguson was assisted by Rev. C.E. Stafford and Rev Shannon, who presided at both morning and evening services. Miss Louisa Jane Tremain played the organ which was loaned for the day by Joseph Halpenny.

North Arthur Methodist Church

The Horning family was mainly responsible for the erection of this Wesleyan Methodist Church. Land was given by the McMullen family from S 1/2 lot 5, con 6 Arthur Tp., and deeded "forever" to the Methodist Church. All the Protestant families in the area attended.

Rev. A. Glazier was the first minister, Sunday School was organized under Richard Hampson, Superintendent. Prayer Meetings were held, and an Epworth League was formed. Mr. Hampton's daughter, Annie played the organ and was the choir leader.

The church remained open until 1925, Rev. Hugh Taylor was the last minister.

Conn Methodist Church

It was located on lot 1, con 1, in the north-east corner of Arthur Tp. Due to severe fires, drought and late frosts in the area, they were financially unable to build a church 1871-72. But in 1873, land was purchased from Robert Conn for one dollar. It was known as Nelson's Church and was part of the Mount Forest Mission.

In 1884, Conn was known as Bell's Corners and they were connected with Cedarville, with parsonage at Conn. In 1887, John Evans of Conn and William Hatch of North Arthur were on the Offfical Board. Later the Conn Church was veneered with brick. At Conn, the Methodists joined with the Presbyterians in 1912, and in 1925 they voted for Church Union. The Old Methodist Church was torn down in 1927.
