CUSHING, JOHN

John Cushing was born Norfolk Co., Eng., 1802; d. 1883, age 81. He and his wife were silk weavers in Eng. and went to the United States in 1841, stopping in New York, and in 1842 came to Arthur Tp. He was a Methodist, and a Liberal. He m. Elizabeth Dennington, who d.1883, age 79. Issue: William, Elizabeth (d. young), and Eliza.

William, b. Norfolk Co., Eng., 1826, came to Canada with his parents in 1842, only a very few settlers preceding them in Arthur Tp. He was one of the leading citizens of Arthur, and carried on a large farm, and was Tp. Clerk for over 30 years. He was active in church work, being one of the founders of Kenilworth Methodist church, in which he was a class leader for many years. He was successful in accumulating a fine property, besides educating his family and giving them a start in life.

On Nov. 71 1849, he m. Sarah Thompson. Issue: Mrs. (Rev.) Wm. Hartley, Hon. William H., Minister of Public Works, Alberta; John (d. 45), George, Mrs. Samuel Waters (d. 1897), Sarah A. (d. young), Alfred B., Arthur T., and Harriet (d. young). Of this branch: Hon. William H., Alfred B., and Arthur T., are members of the firm of Cushing Bros. Ltd., Calgary, who have a large sash and door factory in the west, with branches at Edmonton and Regina.

Alfred B. is a B.A. of Toronto University, and Arthur a B.A. of Victoria College. All of the late Mr. Cushing's sons take leading parts in the locations where they have settled.

George owned the old homestead set. by his grandfather in 1842, which he sold in 1899. He is a leading man, and a successful general merchant at Kenilworth, also Postmaster, and has held the office of Tp. Clerk for 13 years. He is also a Magistrate and Commissioner. He m. Annie E., dau. of the late James Langdon. Issue: Randolph, Harriet E., Alice B., Wilfrid L., Ralph G. and Elizabeth M.
