HIGINBOTHAM, NATHANIEL

Col. Nathaniel HiginbothamNathaniel Higinbotham was born in 1830 in County Caven Ireland and died Jan 19, 1911, arrived in Canada in 1846 to help his brother Dr. Andrew Higinbotham with his drugstore in Brantford,

In 1848 he opened A & H Higinbotham drugstore in Guelph in Market Square in partnership with his brother in the store occupied in 1906 by William Sunley as a stove store.

1851 druggist and chemist and takes over the firm of A & N Higinbotham.

1850 Director of the Farmers and Mechanics Institute.

1856-1858 (Pewholder Norfolk St.),

1858 combined his resources with Edward R. Martin (Barrister) to build the Higinbotham Block at the corner of Wyndham & MacDonnell Sts and moved his store into the corner of the building,

1862 married Margaret Allan and had ten children and built one storey cottage "Riverview" at the corner of Arthur and News Sts to house his father Nathanel Sr. and two sisters Anne Jane and Eliza,

1860, 1861, 1865 & 1866 Guelph Town Councillor for the East Ward,

1868 sold drugstore to Edmund Harvey and formed Wellington Oil Refinery with partner McLagan,

1868 Mayor of Guelph,

1868 incorporated a group of citizens to construct a covered curling rink,

1870 member of the Board of Trade,

1872 Director Guelph General Hospital

November 28, 1870 committee member forming the Agricultural Implement Association and he was Liberal M.P. for North Wellington 'till 1878 and insurance,

1870 Director Guelph Gas Company, 1873 Oct 22 he was made the recipient of a handsome gold watch by his friends,

1881 Registrar for Wellington County until death in 1911,

1882-83 Manager of Standard Oil Co. office in the Higinbotham block, McDonnell, refinery junction of G.W.R. and G.T.R. on Crimea St.

1884 board of Guelph Junction Railway,

1911 Jan 9 died of brochitis at Riverview
