Biography
Abt. 1825:
Thomas Streatfield born. His exact place of birth while in Kent is uncertain (see below).
Abt. 1829:
Mary Bucksey born in High Halstow, Kent to Joseph Buxsy or Buxy and his second wife, Mary, née Pace. She was baptized at the local church on 11 January.
1841:
Thomas is living in Blex House, Teynham with his parents and younger brother George (HO107/0476/4 schedule 22 p.6). Mary Bucksey, although only 10 years old, is working as a female servant in the parish of Saint Mary to the south of High Halstow (HO107/0459/10 schedule 4 p.1). She appears to be living with a William Copelton (age 23) in part of a house in Barn Street. I can find no trace of either of her parents, however, there are other Buckseys living in the parish but their relationship to Mary is currently unknown.
1849:
Thomas and Mary were married after banns by J. Formby in the parish church at Frindsbury, Kent on the 10 November 1849. Thomas is a labourer but he was able to sign the register, though Mary made her mark, as did the two witnesses - Joseph Bucksey, father of the bride and Hannah Sellis.
1851:
The couple were living at Halstow Hill in High Halstow, Kent, along with their 5 month old son also called Thomas (Piece HO 107/1609 Folio 562 Page 6 Schedule 16). Thomas senior was working as an agricultural labourer. Thomas lists his birthplace as Minster, probably the parish of Minster-in-Sheppey which is the location of Sheerness. Mary lists her home parish as Halstow, which is where baby Thomas was born.
1852:
Son Joseph born in early May and registered to Thomas STREITFIELD (sic) and Mary STREITFIELD (sic) formerley BUXEY (sic). Joseph was born at the Hoo Union, which suggests that the family may have hit hard times. Hoo Union was in the parish of Hoo St. Wurburgh and Joseph was baptised in the parish church later that same month. Interestingly, his father’s name is listed as Thomas Edward STREATFIELD and his occupation given as labourer.
1861:
Ten years later and the couple are still in High Halstow (Piece RG 9/475 Folio 56 Page 6 Schedule 29). Thomas is still an agricultural labourer but this time he lists his birthplace as Teynham. Their son Thomas is now 10 years old, and has been joined by Joshua (sic) age 8, George age 6, Mary Ann age 4 and William age 1.
1864:
A daughter, Eliza, is born in August but dies just 4 days later.
1871:
The family are now living in Milsted at 1 School Vicinity (Piece RG10/981 Folio 126 Page 10 Schedule 47). Thomas has gone up in the world and is now a farm bailiff. He lists his birthplace as Sheerness. The eldest children are no longer at home but Mary Ann (15) and William (13) have been joined by Edward (10) Emma (5) and Fanny (2). Mary, William and Edward as listed as scholars. Emma and Fanny were both born in Milsted, so the family must have moved here between 1861 and 1866. The family are probably obtaining extra income from their two boarders, John Samkins and Henry Tumber.
1881:
Thomas’s rise in fortunes continues in 1881 where he is now farming 35 acres at Bogs Hole Farm, Whitstable, Kent (Piece RG11/964 Folio 84 Page 10 Schedule 51). Edward’s (20) occupation is listed as farmer’s son and Emma (15) is a dairy maid. Fanny (13) is still at school as is Henry (8), who was born while the family was still at Milsted.
1891:
Thomas, Mary and youngest son Henry (18) are now living at Monks Farm, Lynsted, KEN (Piece RG12/715 Folio 80 Page 14 Schedule 85). Thomas and Henry are both employed as farm labourers, Thomas no longer seems to be farming in his own right.. Emma (25) is working as a parlour maid to the Peppers of Woodhurst Lea, Ifield in Sussex (RG12/829 folio 4 page 1). Fanny has vanished to who knows where!
1895:
Mary Streatfield, wife of Thomas Streatfield a farm labourer, died on 01 April 1895 at Nouds Farm in Lynsted, Kent. She died from mammary carcinoma asthenia, in other words disability due to breast cancer. Her son H. Streatfield, presumed to be Henry, registered the death on the 03 April, giving her age as just 72. Mary was laid to rest in the churchyard at Lynsted on the 06 April 1895.
1897:
Thomas Streatfield died aged 71 on the 21 July 1897 at Bogle, Lynsted, Kent. The cause of death was paralysis due to a cerebral thrombosis i.e. a stroke. The death was registered by his daughter-in-law, M. Streatfield on the day of death. She gave his occupation as a former farm bailiff. Thomas was also buried in the churchyard at Lynsted, on the 22 July 1897. The National Probate Calendar was checked for the years 1897-1899 but no grant of probate was found, suggesting that Thomas died intestate.
