MAPS - EARLY FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND Early Frederick County - 1748
On July 4, 1760, Maryland and Pennsylvania settled the boundary dispute between the two provinces with the signing of an elaborate document. The final settlement came with the acceptance of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1767, which took a large portion of land previously claimed by Maryland (and Pennsylvania) and added it to Pennsylvania.
HUNDREDS MAPSHundreds were formed on sections of land with 100 "taxables" (males, age 16 and older and male and female slaves, age 16 and older). Unoccupied land could be included in these 'tracts' and each was given a distinct name and had a constable assigned to keep order, much like later Sheriffs.
