16. John Clayton Morrison, born
November 07, 1873 in Wapello County, Iowa; died August 24,
1938 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. He was the son of
32. John
Thomas Morrison and 33.
Nancy Rebeca Forsythe.
He married 17. Florence Belle Elder
December 10, 1902 in Benjamin Elder's resident, Davis
County, Iowa.
Notes for
John Clayton Morrison:
The 1900 Federal census lists John,
age 26, as still single and living at home. It
lists his occupation as Engineer. However, the
1910 census shows him married, living in Davis County,
and records that he was not able to read or
write. The term Engineer must have been used
loosely in those days. The 1910 census shows him
to be a farmer in Marion Township, Davis County, Iowa,
with a mortgaged farm, schedule 67.
The 1915 Iowa census shows the family
living in Wapello County, near Blakesburg.
By 1920 John and family were in Sugar
Creek Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa where he was a
laborer with a farm home at schedule 121.
The 1925 Iowa census shows John and
family still in Sugar Creek Township. This
census records the fact that John finished the eighth
(8th) grade and could read and write.
Additionally the 1930 Sugar Creek Township, Poweshiek
County, Iowa census, where John is a general farm
laborer, says that he can read and write. These
contradict the 1910 census.
According to his obituary, in 1930 his
health began to fail and since that time he had been a
constant sufferer with asthma and heart trouble.
But it was just a week before his death that he became
critically ill. During that time he suffered
intensely and "all that loving hand could do gradually
failed." The death record states he died of
asthma and heart trouble. John was buried
originally in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Mahaska
County, Iowa according to the "Index of Mahaska County
Iowa Deaths 1932-1940". This would have meant he
was subsequently disinterred and reburied in Mounts
Cemetery, NE1/4 of section 21 of Marion Township in
Davis County, Iowa. However the obituary states
he was laid to rest in Mounts Cemetery. It would
appear the death index is incorrect.
The 1885 and 1895 census records both
state that John was born in Wapello County, while the
obituary states Davis County. Also, the ages on
all the census records show John to have been born in
1873, including the 1900 census that says he was born
November 1873, while the obituary says 1874. I
side with the census records in recording his birth
statistics.
17. Florence Belle Elder, born June
22, 1882 in Marion Township, Davis County, Iowa; died
April 01, 1968 in Mahaska Manor Nursing Home, Oskaloosa,
Mahaska County, Iowa. She was the daughter of 34. Benjamin
Baker Elder and 35. Mary Lucinda Tharp.
Notes for
Florence Belle Elder:
The 1900 Federal census identifies
Florence as living with her parents with an occupation
of teacher. The 1925 Iowa census records that
she finished the eighth (8th) grade. It did not
take much of an education to become a teacher at the
turn of the century, only an eighth grade diploma and
some high school training.
The 1910 Federal census lists Floyd,
age 4, and states that she and John have been married
7 years. She had given birth to two children,
with 1 still alive at this census taking.
Florence is buried in Mounts Cemetery,
NE1/4 of section 21 in Marion Township of Davis
County, Iowa.
Children of John Morrison and Florence Elder are: |
|
i. | Ivah Icel Morrison,
born December 02, 1903 in Davis County, Iowa; died May 25,
1905 in Davis County, Iowa.
Ivah may have been named after her
aunt, Ivah Myrtle Elder, sister of Florence. Ivah
died at 1 year, 5 months, and 23 days of whooping cough
and pneumonia. She was buried May 26 in Mounts
Cemetery, NE1/4 of section 21 in Marion Township of
Davis County, Iowa.

ii. | Floyd Wayne
Morrison, born November 20, 1905 in Davis County, Iowa; died
September 20, 1988 in Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des
Moines, Polk County, Iowa; married Glenna Hazel Robertson
August 20, 1927 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa; born March
13, 1908 in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa; died January
28, 1992 in Sunnyview Care Center, Ankeny, Polk County,
Iowa.
Floyd was the first of his family to
graduate from high school, the school being Searsboro
High School in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He started
married life working as a farm hired hand. He
worked as timekeeper on a WPA road crew during the
depression of the 1930's. Then in 1941 he started
work with the Iowa Valve Company in Oskaloosa, Mahaska
County, Iowa where he worked as a machinist until
retirement in 1970. He also worked insurance
part-time from an office in the basement of his home,
and continued to do so for a number of years after
retirement from the Iowa Valve Company. He died of
congestive heart failure and was buried September 23 in
Forest Memorial Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Mahaska County,
Iowa.

iii. | Fallace Earl
Morrison, born July 02, 1912 in Davis County, Iowa; died
July 1983 in Spirit Lake, Kootenai County, Idaho; married
June Talbot October 21, 1939 in Lancaster, Schuyler County,
Missouri; born June 17, 1922 in Bussey, Marion County, Iowa;
died November 22, 1979 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.
The 1920 Federal census for Sugar
Creek Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa lists Fallace as
a daughter named Alice. Another example of how
census takers were and are prone to mistakes.
Fallace and family moved to the Phoenix, Arizona area
for health reasons. He worked as a hired farm
hand. The Social Security Death Index lists his
last residence as Spirit Lake, Kootenai County, Idaho
and his death date July 1983. It is most probable
one of his children was living in Spirit Lake, since
Carl's obituary in 1980 still shows Fallace as living in
Phoenix.

iv. | Carl V. Morrison,
born August 01, 1914 in Davis County, Iowa; died March 15,
1980 in Mercy Hospital, Davenport, Scott County, Iowa;
married Thelma Morgan 1954 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa;
born September 1, 1907 in Ontario, Vernon County, Wisconsin;
died May 21, 1999 in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin.
Carl worked for John Deere Plow and
Planter Works in Moline, Illinois for 29 1/2 years
before retiring in 1972. Years of smoking and
working in the dusty and dirty manufacturing environment
caused a severe case of emphysema. This most
surely contributed to his death as The Lung Association
was one of the options listed in his obituary for making
memorial contributions.

v. | Mary G. Morrison,
born October 04, 1916 in Blakesburg, Wapello County, Iowa;
died September 22, 1948 in LeClaire, Scott County, Iowa;
married Glen Oliver Rea Abt. 1932 in Ottumwa, Wapello
County, Iowa; born August 24, 1911 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska
County, Iowa; died January 16, 1980 in Leighton, Mahaska
County, Iowa.
Mary died at the young age of 31
years, 11 months, and 18 days of a sudden heart
attack. Her oldest child, age 15 at the time, came
home from school to find his mother dead. She was
buried in Forest Memorial Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Mahaska
County, Iowa.

|
vi. | Helen Lorene
Morrison, born July 19, 1924 in Searsboro, Sugar Creek
Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa; died September 26, 1984 in
Mahaska County Hospital, Oskaloosa, Iowa; married Ronald E.
Showman June 06, 1941 in Lancaster, Missouri; born December
28, 1919 in Delta, Keokuk County, Iowa; died November 29,
1973 in Veteran's Hospital, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.
She preferred to be called
Lorene. Her husband, Ronald, worked in the
Foundary at the Iowa Valve Company in Oskaloosa, Mahaska
County, Iowa, where Lorene's brother, Floyd, worked as a
machinist. Lorene was a homemaker and also very
actively worked an Avon route in Oskaloosa. She
was diagnosed with breast cancer, and despite aggressive
therapy, she died of cancer September 26, 1984.
She was buried September 29 in Forest Memorial Cemetery,
Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.

18. Harley Clark Robertson, born
March 23, 1889 in Searsboro, Poweshiek County, Iowa; died
November 12, 1968 in Camair Convalescent Home, Oskaloosa,
Mahaska County, Iowa. He was the son of 36. William
Parker Robertson and 37.
Sarah E. Knox.
He married 19. Lena Hazel Sexton
August 12, 1907 in Mahaska County, Iowa.
Notes for
Harley Clark Robertson:
The Prairie Township, Mahaska County,
Iowa 1910 Federal census entry shows Harley as a farm
laborer on a rented farm. This census noted that
Harley was not out of work on April 15, 1910, but did
spend 16 weeks out of work in 1909. In the 1915
census Harley, age 26, was a farmer. He earned
$700 in 1914. The 1920 Federal census shows
Harley and family in Sugar Creek Township, Poweshiek
County, Iowa. Harley is a farmer on schedule
21. In the 1930 Federal census for Prairie
Township, Mahaska County, Iowa he is shown as a tenant
farmer. He was a farmer for most of his adult
life. After he retired from farming, he and Lena
lived in New Sharon and he worked as a delivery man
for the local grocery store.
Harley and Lena are buried in the
Friends Cemetery at the south end of New Sharon, Iowa.
19. Lena Hazel Sexton, born
September 26, 1890 in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa;
died December 23, 1973 in her home, New Sharon, Mahaska
County, Iowa. She was the daughter of 38.
Pierson Grant Sexton
and 39. Mary Eleanor Farr.
Notes for
Lena Hazel Sexton:
Lena was a homemaker during Harley's
farming years. After Harley's retirement from
farming Lena took in washing and ironing to supplement
their retirement income.
In addition to raising her 4 children,
she also raised one of her grandsons to adulthood, and
then had one of her great grandsons living with her at
the time of her death. The back yard of their
home in New Sharon was always a fun place to
visit. They had their own private zoo with cages
containing fox, racoon, hawk and all sort of other
wildlife.
Children of Harley Robertson and Lena Sexton are: |

i. | Glenna Hazel
Robertson, born March 13, 1908 in New Sharon, Mahaska
County, Iowa; died January 28, 1992 in Sunnyview Care
Center, Ankeny, Polk County Iowa; married Floyd Wayne
Morrison August 20, 1927 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa;
born November 20, 1905 in Davis County, Iowa; died September
20, 1988 in Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Polk
County, Iowa.

ii. | Kenneth Harley
Robertson, born March 07, 1910 in Taintor, Prairie Township,
Mahaska County, Iowa; died November 09, 1941 in near Cedar,
Mahaska County, Iowa; married Freda M. Myers August 20, 1930
in Methodist Parsonage, New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa;
born May 13, 1914; died May 22, 1953.
During his boyhood he attended
various schools in Poweshiek county and after graduating
from eighth grade he farmed with his father for several
years. Later he became engaged in trucking and
during the last year of his life had built up a
successful business through the management of the
Diamond D-X Oil station in New Sharon.
On the night of November 9, 1941
Kenneth had gone to Fremont, Iowa where he had tried to
make arrangements to purchase a quantity of anti-freeze
for sale at his station. On the way back home,
Kenneth met a violent death in an auto wreck that
instantly killed him. His car crashed headon into
a big truck on highway U. S. 63 in the town of
Cedar. So terrific was the crash that when
rescuers arrived with the sheriff, it was some time
before Robertson could be extricated from the
wreckage. He was badly cut about his body with
several bones broken in his legs and arms.
He and Freda had one child who died
in infancy.

iii. | Dortha Marie
Robertson, born November 18, 1913 north of Taintor, in Sugar
Creek Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa; died July 06, 1964
in her home, Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa; married (1)
Kirk Gardner Richards February 02, 1935 in New Sharon,
Mahaska County, Iowa; born December 08, 1915 in New Sharon,
Mahaska County, Iowa; died December 12, 1951 in Mayo Clinic,

Kirk was the son of Lester Richards
and Anna Richards Wymore, and was born December 8, 1915
on a farm jsut west of New Sharon where he resided, with
the exception of a few years, until the time of his
death. Kirk started to become jaundiced
looking. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in
Oskaloosa, Iowa, but the doctors were unable to
determine the cause. He was subsequently moved to
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. At any one
time there were as many as 30 specialists trying to
determine the cause of his illness. After he died,
the autopsy showed he had cancer of the heart, an
extremely rare illness - one that the specialists at
Mayo had never heard of at the time.
Dortha kept the farm going until
Lloyd was old enough to take over the operation.
Dortha met and married Richard Kitch of Mt. Pleasant,
Iowa. After the wedding she and Afton moved to Mt.
Pleasant, where she died of cancer in 1964.

bottles. There was an accident where a speeding
car ran into Dale's truck with such force that milk
bottles were tossed all around the interior of the
truck. Dale was so badly cut by all the broken
glass that he died of loss of blood before they could
get him to a hospital. His body was returned to
New Sharon, Iowa where he was buried in the Friends
Cemetery.
He and Esther had a son Melvin and a
daughter Judy. After Dale's death, Melvin came to
New Sharon to live with his grandparents Harley and Lena
Robertson while Judy remained in California with her
mother. Esther operated a beauty shop in the
Albany area.

20. Emil Edward Dahlstrom, born
November 13, 1890 in Ishpeming, Marquette County,
Michigan; died December 03, 1960 in his home, Thornburg,
Keokuk County, Iowa. He was the son of 40.
Anders August Andersson
and 41. Anna Lovisa Grund.
He married 21. Icie Blanche Waterhouse
December 22, 1912 in Keokuk County, Iowa.
Notes for
Emil Edward Dahlstrom:
It is unclear whether Emil was born
Anderson or Dahlstrom. Among the photos in the
Andrew Dahlstrom Album is one of Emil's baptism entry
in Ishpeming, Michigan. That entry shows his
parents' entry Anders August Anderson Dahlstrom and
his wife Anna Lovisa. That marks the first time
where the change from Anderson to Dahlstrom is
recorded. It is unclear when that name change
occurred in relation to Emil's birth.
Emil worked as blacksmith and farmer,
and finally as owner and proprietor of Dahlstrom
Lumber Company of Thornburg in Keokuk County,
Iowa. While working as a blacksmith he was
kicked in the hip by a horse. This injury caused
him great pain the rest of his life, causing him to
use a cane and keeping him from being able to stand
erect. When he was no longer able to handle the
lumber business by himself his oldest son moved back
to Thornburg to assist, and eventually take over the
business.
Emil and Icie are buried at Sixteen
Cemetery west of Thornburg, Keokuk County, Iowa.
21. Icie Blanche Waterhouse, born
April 01, 1895 in Springfield, Keokuk County, Iowa; died
December 31, 1960 in her home, Thornburg, Keokuk County,
Iowa. She was the daughter of 42. Nelson Waterhouse
and 43. Mary M. Coghlan.
Notes for
Icie Blanche Waterhouse:
Icie worked as a telephone operator in
Gibson, near Thornburg, Keokuk County, Iowa in the
days of the old manual switchboard and party lines.
Children of Emil Dahlstrom and Icie Waterhouse are: |
|
i. | Melvin Floyd
Dahlstrom, born April 25, 1913 in What Cheer, Keokuk County,
Iowa; died June 10, 2005 in Manor House Nursing Home,
Sigourney, Keokuk County, Iowa; married Arlene Florence
Zimmerman November 22, 1940 in Methodist Parsonage in
Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa; born April 9,1920 in Cedar
Rapids, Linn County, Iowa; died January 24, 2000 in Manor
House Nursing Home, Sigourney, Keokuk County, Iowa.
Melvin attended school at What Cheer
and graduated as valedictorian of the Wellman High
School Class of 1930. After high school, he
attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant.
Melvin served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to
1945. He used to talk about enlisting in the
Navy. During one of the assemblies, a commanding
officer wnet up and down the line arbitrarily
identifying those who would be in the Navy and those who
would be in the Coast Guard. Melvin ended up in
the latter.
Melvin married Arlene Zimmerman on
November 22, 1940. Arlene and Jon moved to Frisco
Bay, California during his term of enlistment.
After discharge from sevice at the end of World War II,
they moved to Oklahoma where he worked for the U.S.
Government as a federal prison guard. They moved
to Thornburg, Iowa in 1949 where he assisted his father
in the operation of the Dahlstrom Lumber Company
there. After his father retired he owned and
operated the Dahlstrom Lumber Company.

22. Joe Zimmerman, born December 04,
1900 in Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois; died November
27, 1974 in his home north of Thornburg, Keokuk County,
Iowa. He was the son of 44. August Zimmerman, Sr.
and 45. Carolina Hochwarth.
He married 23. Luella Florence McKay
October 22, 1919 in Webster, Keokuk County, Iowa.
Notes for
Joe Zimmerman:
Joe moved with his family to Keokuk
County, Iowa in 1908. He farmed his entire adult
life on 80 acres north of Thornburg, Keokuk County,
Iowa.
This article from an unknown
newspaper, written by Rev. J. D. O'Dell is a very
interesting illustration of the writing style of that
day. "On Wednesday P. M. October 22 a Sedan
flivver pulled up at the Webster parsonage of the M.
E. church and we confess meeting old acquaintances is
always a joy to us but when the parties have that
twinkle in their eyes that suggests a pleasant
surprise in something unusual about to happen, why of
course our doors are always open and we are more than
glad to put all at ease in our very best
fashion. Such was the occasion when the McKays
and Zimmermans of Thornburg called. The program
was soon put in our hands and after the usual
information was given in a jolly good humor Miss
Luella McKay and Mr. Joe Zimmerman arose and by
joining their right hands pledged their faith and love
in Holy Matrimony while Rev. J. D. O'Dell solemnized
their vows and invoked the blessing of Almighty God
upon the union of their young lives and pronounced
them husband and wife.
"Mrs. Zimmerman is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Sam McKay and is a young lady of splendid
home training, always jolly and lots of pep; just the
kind that makes things go. Mr. Zimmerman is the
youngest son of Mr. August Zimmerman and has been
associated with his father in large business
enterprises both on the farm and in the store; so that
we predict more than an ordinary career for these
young people and our best wishes go with them."
Joe and Luella are buried at Sixteen
Cemetery west of Thornburg, Keokuk County, Iowa.
23. Luella Florence McKay, born
April 02, 1902 in Sherrard, Mercer County, Illinois; died
March 26, 2003 in Manor House Nursing Home, Sigourney,
Keokuk County, Iowa. She was the daughter of 46. Samuel
McKay, Jr. and 47. Annie Jones.
Notes for
Luella Florence McKay:
Luella was a homemaker on the farm as
long as Joe was alive. After he died, Luella
sold the farm and retired to What Cheer, Keokuk
County, Iowa. She enjoyed extensive traveling in
her retirement years, going with a number of seniors
in the area on a tour bus that originated from What
Cheer. She traveled to nearly all the 48
contiguous states and Canada. She truly enjoyed
life.
Child of Joe Zimmerman and Luella Florence McKay is: |
