     Robert Bracewell , Jr. was born in 1650 at Isle Of Wight County, Virginia.¹ He was the son of Robert Bracewell and Rebecca Unknown.¹ Robert Bracewell , Jr. married Susanna Burgess circa 1670 at Isle Of Wight County, Virginia.¹ Robert Bracewell , Jr. died before 1714 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.¹
     Robert Bracewll Junior was the elder son of Reverend Robert andRebecca Bracewell of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He was bornabout 1650. He married Susannah Burgess - daughter of John and MaryBurgess ('Southside Virginia Families' by Boddie). This is furtheraffirmed by one Joyce Cripps, who in her will referred to 'SusannahBracewell', my sister's daughter. (Deed and Will Book 2, Page 202). Beginning 3 February 1674, six years after the death of his father -the Reverend Robert Bracewell, Junior sold 500 acres of land in threeseparate lists. The 300 acres where his father had lived he sold to hissister Ann and her husband James Bagnall 31 March 1674. On 9 March 1680,James Bagnall escheated (forfeited) the 300 acres and a mill, once theproperty of the Reverend Robert Bracewell. (Deed Book 1, page 457) When one - Robert Toole - made his will 5November 1692, he named the three youngest children of SusannahBracewell, i.e. Richard, William, and Elizabeth, each to receiveone-third of an estate of land at the age of seventeen years. (Book 2,page 323). Toole's will is evidence that the four eldest children ofRobert and Susannah Burgess Bracewell were born before 1692, which helpsto establish the approximate dates of their births. On 27 March 1696,Robert Bracewell Junior appointed his loving wife - Susannah Bracewell -to act as his attorney. Whether this was due to his failing health or forbusiness reasons is not known. (Deed Book I, page 627). The last time Robert Bracewell's nameappears in the Isle of Wight records was 9 April 1702, when he witnesseda deed for Owen Bourn. (Deed Book 1, page 351). No will was recorded inhis name and there is no record of his death. Susannah Bracewell musthave outlived her husband, Robert, by many years. She made her will on 22October 1714, but it was not probated until 26 June 1732. She left thehome plantation to her son Richard, whom she named as her executor. toher son William, she gave the old plantation house with forty acres ofland and various household items. Susannah Burgess Bracewell rememberedher daughter Ann, her granddaughter Elizabeth Bracewell, and hergrandson, John Riggs, with small bequests; and left the remainder of herestate to her eldest son, James Bracewell. This same James later moved to Edgecomb County, North Carolina andbecame the direct ancestor of the late James Craig Braswell, well-knowncitizen of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. (Will Book 3, page 304). The daughter of Ann mentioned in Susannah'swill, and the Elizabeth mentioned in the will of the Roger Tolle, mighthave been the same person or Elizabeth might have been deceased at thetime Susannah's will was made. On 22 February 1627-28 he entered OxfordUniversity at the age of fifteen. On 3 November 1631 he graduated with aBA degree. He became an Anglican clergyman, immigrated to America, asearly as 10 November 1635 and was living in the Isle of Wight, Virginia,where he owned a plantation on the Blackwater River. He became the rectorof the Anglican Church which is now known as the Old Brick Church, Isleof Wight, Virginia. In 1653 Robert Braswell was elected to the House of Burgesses ofVirginia. At this period of time separation of church and state was thesubject of much agitation in both Europe and America. In 1653 he wassuspended from the House of Burgesses. As stated 'At a Grand AssemblyJuly 5, 1653, it is ordered by the present Grand Assembly that Mr RobertBracewell, clerke, be suspended, and is not in a capacity of serving as aBurgesses, since it is unpresidential, and may produce bad consequences.'Here the name is spelled Bracewell, however in records pertaining toRobert Braswell the name is sometimes spelled Braswell and sometimesBracewell. Records of his descendants have those two spellings, as well asothers, such as Brascill, Brazill, and Brazel. This does not mean thatthe individual himself was inconsistent in the spelling of his name, asthe name was often written by lawyers, clerks, and custodians of records.In direct quotations the original form will be used. The will of theReverend Bracewell (Braswell) was made 15 February 1671. It was one ofthe earlier wills made in this country. It is to be found in Deed andWill Book I, page 9, of the Isle of Wight records of Virginia. In his will Robert Bracewell directed that his two underage sons -Robert Jr. and Richard - were to receive the bulk of his estate and wereto share the 700 acre home plantation and 800 acres on the NansemondRiver. They also were to share in the new mill when it was completed. Henamed two friends and neighbors - George Gwellin (Welsh for William) andRichard Izard - to act as guardians for the children, each to receivefour shillings with which to buy himself a ring. He further directed thathis two sons be placed in school to learn to read and write. His threemarried daughters were to receive three cows each. The indenturedservant, Elizabeth Hall, was to receive a heifer. Seven of his friendswere to receive one cow, and his son-in-law William West was to receive acow and yearling. Included in the inventory of his property were sixty three head oflivestock, a servant boy, a library worth 500 pounds of tobacco, a sloop,silverware, and numerous articles of clothing and household furnishings.The total value of his estate was given as 35,800 pounds of tobacco (Willand Deed Book I, page 55). From an accounting of his estate rendered on10 January 1669-70 and signed by Richard and Rebecca Izard, it appearsthat Mr Izard, who owned the adjoining plantation, must have performedhis duties in a very satisfactory manner indeed. The children of the Reverend Robert Bracewell and Rebecca were: 1.Jane - whose first marriage was to Robert Stokes, her second marriage wasto Rober Ely, and her third marriage was to John Roberts. 2.
