COUNTY STATISTICS


 

County Valuation

1901. General county purposes (basis or standard for county rates, including Higher Education rate), �958,022, a penny rate produces producing; �3,991 15s 4d.. Government grant under the Agricultural Rates Act., 1896, �3,941 11s 10d.

Special county purposes (deducting assessment of Poole borough), �871,674.

Police purposes (deducting assessment of Weymouth borough), �855,540.

Elementary Education purposes (deducting assessments of Poole and Weymouth) �769,192.

Main Roads Of Portland.

The length of main roads on the Island maintained by the Urban District Council at the expense of the Dorset. County Council, is seven miles and a few yards. Previous to the dismaining (sic) of the road from Yeates to Weston the main roads were 8� miles in length.

Representation

In view of the movement of Portland, Weymouth, Poole, Branksome, and Dorchester to secure increased representation on the Dorset County Council, the following electoral statistics may be of interest:

It is proposed to give Weymouth and Poole each a fourth Councillor. The 16 representatives will then have each an average electorate of 799.

* Portland's population includes 6,587 persons on H.M. ships, in Military barracks, and the Convict

Prison.

� Swanage and Wimborne have rural parishes attached to their electoral division.

It is proposed to give Branksome an additional County Councilor. The average electorate of the seven urban divisions will then be 925. Swanage and Wimborne also to lose the rural portions of their electoral districts. This will reduce Swanage's population to 3,408, and the electorate to 803.

Wimborne's population will be 3,696 and electorate 846.

Dorset County Boys' Home, In October 1904, there were 60 boys in the school and 35 on license.
