William H. SARRETT was an athlete and was a bare-back rider
in a circus for two years. He was also very good violin player.
He married Lucy Ann WILLS, about 1858 and they had a baby boy
who died. They lived at Arnett, Raleigh Co., WV. until the
Civil War. (1861-1865) <---

At the begining of the Civil War (1861) William H. SARRETT,
age 24yrs he started out to Ohio, to join as a Union soldier. He and wife
Lucy A. (WILLS) walked down to Pond Fork, Boone Co. [WV] to Madison, [Boone Co., WV.]
thence up the "Spruce Fork" to the town of Blair [Logan Co.] in West Virginia
then through Logan Co., across the "Guyan River" and on into
Kentucky to his Aunt's on "Peters Creek" They had one child with
them Sam Fortner SARRETT, age of seven years. During their stay
there Union Rebel Troops passed by the place. <---

William H. SARRETT, was a "Yankee" (U.S.A) during the Civil
War and one morning a Captain "Rebel" (C.S.A.) with 20 men
came with a rope to hang the "dammed Yankee" SARRETT.
The Aunt's husband, "LAFERTY" took the men out to rob
bees. (This was in March) The Aunt told Lucy Ann (WILLS)
SARRETT and William H.'s boy Samuel F. that they now must
run. Lucy Ann (WILLS) SARRETT, was 7 months pregnant with
daughter Louverne Emmaline SARRETT (later Mrs. COBBS) They
went about 2 miles from Proctorville, Ohio across from
Guyandotte and stayed there until Louverne Emmaline SARRETT
was born on 09 Jun. 1862. <---

William H. SARRETT, age 24y had joined the Company "F" of
the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery of the Union Army (U.S.A.)
he served 3 years, during which time Lucy Ann (WILLS)
SARRETT lived near him with the children Sam & Louverne.
After the war William H. SARRETT, a28 (1865) came back
to Arnett, Raleigh Co., WV. where he lived for one year.
He died on 13 Nov 1866 from effects of "Tuberculosis and
measles" contracted by returning to guard duty too soon
after having measles. <---

Attached to District of Eastern Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio, October, 1862, to February, 1863. Covington, Ky., District Kentucky, Dept. Ohio, to August, 1863. Designation of Regiment changed to 1st Heavy Artillery May 2, 1863. District of North Central Kentucky, Dept. Ohio, to April, 1864. 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 23rd Army Corps, Dept. of Ohio, to February, 1865. 1st Brigade, 4th Division, District of East Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to July, 1865.
SERVICE. Ordered to Kentucky, October 2, 1862. Camp at Ashland, Ky., till January, 1863. Regiment lost during service 6 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 164 Enlisted men by disease. Total 171.
