Mrs. Hazel L. Hess

Brook - Mrs. Hazel L. Hess, 80, died Sunday evening in George Ade Memorial Hospital Extended Care where she had been a patient four months. Mrs. Hess was born in Jasper County and spent her life in Brook. She was married in Brook in 1913 to Everett Hess who died in 1950. A graduate of DePauw University, she was a member of the Brook United Methodist Church and Delta Zeta sorority. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Helen Powell of Brooklyn and Mrs. Martha Brown of Indianapolis: a son, Lawrence E. of Lawton, Okla.: three brothers, Roy Lawrence, Donald Lawrence and Harry Lawrence all of Brook, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Sell of Brook. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Friends called at the Weston Funeral Home Tuesday after 3:00 p.m. and services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the Brook United Methodist Chapel with Rev. Edward Boase officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. ¹⁴ ¹⁷

John Lawrence Dies Suddenly

John Lawrence, 88 died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Everette Hess, on Tuesday morning at 5:30, death being caused by a heart attack. He had been a resident of this community for over sixty years and as long as his health permitted was active in business, community and church affairs. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Thompson officiating, and burial was made in Riverside cemetery. The obituary, readapt the funeral services, was as follows: John Fawcett Lawrence was born November 29, 1858 near Wooster, in Wayne County, Ohio, and departed this life at Brook, Indiana, on August 12, 1947, aged well over eighty-eight years. He was one of twelve children born to Daniel and Catherine Louisi Lawrence, of whom there are two surviving, Cora Louise Gridley, of Kankakee, Illinois, and Edward O. Lawrence of Santa Cruz, California. His early boyhood was spent in Wayne County, Ohio where his father enlisted in the Union Army, leaving his wife and seven small children for three years, until the end of the Civil War. The necessary privations and frugal living of this period gave him a sense of values which he retained throughout his life. After his early schooling, he attended Smithville Normal and was licensed as a school teacher. When a young man of about twenty-one, he came to relatives near Brook, Indiana and taught school in several of the early country schools of this locality, among them being Julian, Possom Trot, Miller and Duffy's College. On Christmas Day 1885 he was united in marriage with Ida Esson, of Brook Indiana at which place they made their home the remainder of his life. To this union were born five children, Roy E. Lawrence, Hazel L. Hess, Ruth A. Sell, Donald Lawrence and Harry Lawrence, all of whom survive. After marriage he continued teaching school for one year and then began farming, an occupation he continued for many years. His parents were devout members of the German Lutheran Church, in which faith he received his early religious training. After marriage, he became a member of the Brook Methodist Church, a membership which he retained the rest of his life. His interest in religion and the affairs of his church were always foremost though he also gave keen interest and study to the problems and welfare of his community and of mankind. He was a member of Brook Masonic Lodge continuously since 1907, during which time he held various offices and maintained an active interest in the works of the lodge. Gardening, reading and association with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren afforded him much pleasure in his later years. In a thousand ways, he will be greatly missed by those who knew him. ⁸ ¹⁷
