General Notes: Husband - Gilbert de Clare, 9th Earl of Gloucester, 7th Earl of Hertford
He was called the "The Red Earl." He was the ninth Earl of Clare, the Sixth Earl of Gloucester, the Seventh Earl of Hertford and the Earl of Cearleon. He was the son of Richard De Clare And Maud De Lacy (Complete Peerage, Vol V pp702-708). In 1253, at the age of 10, red-haired Gilbert's marriage was arranged by his father to Alice Lusignan (Alice of Angouleme, who tried on occasion to seduce young Prince Edward, Longshanks. She was d/o Guy d Lusignan and a step-niece of the king. They divorced in 1271; they had 2 children -- Isabella de Clare .3/10/1263 and Joan de Clare b Abt 1268-- she married Duncan, Earl of Fife.
Gilbert is considered the greatest of the Clares'. He was the leader of the Barons in the early stages of the Baron's War against King Henry the Third, who Was King just before Longshanks. At age 20, following his father's death, be became a supporter of increasingly powerful Simon de Montfort, leader of the barons who were distrustful of Henry. Early in 1265, Edward captured Gilbert's Tonbridgwe Castle and took Gilbert's wife Alice, his half-cousin, prisoner. She was the same young lady with who he had flirted a few years earlier and in fact, it was rumored that they were Having an affair. She was quickly released. By then, Gilbert was a leader of the barons but served under Simon's direction. After Edward's defeat, capture and escape, Gilbert switched sides and pledged to support the prince. Late in 1265, joined by the forces of Roger De Mortimer, Gilbert and Edward achieved a final victory over Simon at Evesham. Nearly two years later, Alice contacted Prince Edward secretly with the warning that her husband intended to capture London. Edward discounted it, but it was true. Believing Longshanks would not keep his pledges, and feeling guilty about abandoning his fellow barons Gilbert decided to infuence the future of England's government. He held London for two months before reaching agreement with the aged King Henry. Shortly after that, he left his unfaithful wife, but an annullment was required, and it took until 1285 for that to occur. Papal dispensation for a new marriage was not granted until late in 1289. He married Joan Plantagenet in 1290, when she was 18 and he was 47.
Gilbert's final battle was a history-making one--the Battle of Bannockburn in Scotland in June 1314 fought in an attempt to halt the Scottish rebellion led by Robert the Bruce. The Red Earl led the attack, only to be opposed by formidable forces of Bruce himself. While the opposing armies watched, Bruce accepted a challenge from one of Gilbert's men and killed him on the open field. The loss of their champion demoralized the English and they went down to defeat at the hands of the counter-attacking Scots. Gilbert De Clare was fatally wounded and died at Edmund of Lancaster's Castle of Monmouth. He was buried at Tewksbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, England.
