Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com, writes in a post-em:

Hi Jim,
Re: Enguerrand d. BEF 1004.
Moriarty shows he married Adele 1033 (p113) or after 1033 (p55). This would of course affect your estimated dates of birth of his children.

His date of death is:
Abt Sep 20 1045 [Ref: Watney p799]
(1045) [Ref: ES II:2] 20 or 21.IX .... [Ref: ES III:635]
abt 1045 [Ref: Moriarty p55]
25 Oct 1053 [Ref: Wm Conqueror]

ES = Europaische Stammtafeln (usually the best ref. for European non-English ancestries).
Moriarty = The Plantagenet Ancestry of King Edward III and Queen Philippa
Watney = The Wallop Family and their Ancestry
Wm. Conqueror = William The Conqueror, The Norman Impact Upon England, David C. Douglas

Other notes:
Attempted to take advantage of the Duke William of Normandy's (the Conqueror) weaker position and lost in battle near the fortresss of Arques. [Ref: Wm Conqueror]

According to later a chronicler (rec. Hist. Franc., vol XI, p. 330) the dying cries of Enguerrand were heard by his sister on the walls of Arques. It is a good story which might even be true, for less than a mile separates the castle from Saint-Aubin-sur-Scie, and the exact site of the engagement is unknown. [Ref: 48 Wm Conqueror, pg 66]

Also ES II:11 gives his mother Gisele's b. as (970) = circa 970. That combined with a marriage date of circa 1033 makes Enguerrand birth date of 980 pretty shakey.

Regards,

Curt

------------------------------------

Note: In terms of the death date (25 Oct 1053) at the siege of Arques, I think Curt is referring to Enguerrand II, d. 1053 at the siege of Arque, whom I have as the grandson. Maybe the grandson is the Enguerrand who m. Adele in 1333/4, as his 1st wife, before marrying Adelaid, sister of William I.

Note: Curt's source must have Adele marrying Enguerrand as her 2nd husband, and not as her 1st, as I show it. This may be true, but their supposed son Hugh must have been born well before 1033/4 (probably around 1000) because Hugh (Adele & Enguerrand's son) d. 20 Nov 1052. He would have been born in 1333/4 and be 18 or 19 years old, possible however unlikely. However AR & CP have Hugh's son Enguerrand II, dead at a siege in 1053; this is impossible if his father wasn't born until 1033/4, because he could be at most 6 or 7 years old, assuming his father sired him when only 12 or 13 years old. Enguerrand II married Adelaide, the sister of William the Conqueror and had at least one child before his death, which clearly could not have been at the age of 6 or 7.

This leaves at least 4 possibilities: (1) Hugh, b. c 997, is not a son of Enguerrand I, maybe his brother; (2) Hugh is the son of Enguerrand by an unknown 1st wife (prior to Adlele); (3) Adele did not marry Enguerrand I, but his grandson Enguerrand II as mentioned above; (4) Curt's or my sources are incorrect (I think least likely of the 4 possibilities). I will use possibility (2) until I can get more information about which of the 4 possibilities are true.

General Notes: Wife - Adele Of Holland

Many sources have Adele as mother of Hugues/Hugh II Comte de Ponthieu. However this is impossible if she married Enguerrand in or after 1033 when her first husband Baudouin Comte de Boulogne died. There is some doubt as to the sequence of events as the following excerpt of a post to SGM, 14 Nov 1998, by Leo van de Pas, illustrates:

According to Genealogie der Graven van Holland, by Dr. AWE Dek, page 12. Arnulf 'may' have had a daughter named Aleida, and this Aleida was married to Engelram I Count of Pontieu who died circa 1045. As footnote this books refers to: For this family see C. Brunel, Recueil des Actes des comtes de Ponthieu, Paris 1930.

Now comes the interesting bit, Schwennicke Volume III/4 page 635. Enguerrand I de Ponthieu married Adeliva, widow of Baudouin Comte de Boulogne, and Adeliva is POSSIBLY daughter of Arnulf van Friesland. That sounds positive until you get hold of page 621 of the same book, the page covering the Counts of Boulogne. There is no mention of a Baudouin/Balduin who married an Adeliva........

EDWARD RIGGS

Another son of Richard's was baptised at Roydon, Essex on 30MCH1589. This is undoubtedly EDWARD of NAZEING, who migrated to America in 1633 to become EDWARD OF ROXBURY.
See photo
Although the above entry in the Parish Register says merely "The sonne of Richard Riggs",[S1] I base this conclusion on the following facts:
bullet Roydon parish is "next door" to Nazeing parish, sharing a common boundary;
bullet The other adjacent parishes have been searched for this time period and none of their Registers contain a baptism for Edward, nor were any other entries for a Riggs/Rigges found;
bullet As will be seen, Edward's wife Elizabeth Holmes was baptised at Nazeing 21 months later, in December 1590 [S3][S4], and therefore the timing of this baptism in March 1589 is appropriate;
bullet As will also be seen, two of Edward and Elizabeth's daughters were named Mary and Lydia. These were the names of Edward's sister Mary and his sister-in-law Lydia (the wife of his brother Francis). [Another of their daughters was named Elizabeth but, as Edward's sister Elizabeth died in infancy before he was born, this daughter was more probably named after his wife.]

"Genealogy of the Riggs Family" by John H. Wallace pub. 1901

"Edward Riggs, the head of the family in this country was born about
1590, in England, and probably in Lincolnshire or Yorkshire, for it is
understood the name is still to be found in that region. There have been
many wild stories told about the origin of the family in this country -
"the three brothers that came from Wales, " etc, that we will not pretend
to controvert, except by simply suggesting what is known historically. He
landed in Boston, early in the summer of 1633 with his family, consisting
of his wife Elizabeth, two sons and four daughters. These children must
have been young people, pretty well grown, for the oldest son was married
two years after arrival. They were among the very early settlers in
Roxbury, then a suburb of Boston. It is said that the best people settled
in Roxbury. Like all immigrants, they had their full share of trials and
sorrows. The first death recorded in the old books of Roxbury was that of
Lydia Riggs, daughter of Edward, in August 1633. In May, 1634, another
daughter Eizabeth, died, and in October of the same year the son John.
August, 1635, the wife and mother, Elizabeth, died. Sometime after this
Edward took a second wife, but there were no children from this union.
She was also named Elizabeth, and all we know of her history is that she
died in 1669. It is wholly evident that Edward was a Puritan in belief
and life, for in 1634 he was made a freeman, which means a voter, and the
first step to that privilege was to be a member of the church. On a loose
leaf found in the ancient transcript there is an enumeration of the
inhabitants of Roxbury, made somewhere between the years of 1638 and
1640, in which Edward's family consisted of four persons, and it is not
violent to assume that they were himself, his wife and two daughters, who
afterward became Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Twitchell. From his will dated
September 2, 1670, it appears that only three lines of descent survived
him, and that all his children were dead except Mary Twitchell. His
daughter, Mrs. Allen, left a daughter, Elizabeth Allen, then of age and a
legatee. Of the children of Mrs. Twitchell, only Joseph and Mary are
named. and they, as well as others not named, appear to have been minors.
Mrs. Twitchell was the principal legatee. His first bequest is "that my
daughter-in-law, my sonne Edward Rigges, his wife" and "to my four
grandchildren, my sonne Edward Rigges' children." It will be noticed that
none of these is named and as I could find only three children of the
second Edward for a long time, there was some doubt as to whether Edward
of Derby, Conn., and Newark, NJ., was the son of the testator. At last I
found the fourth child, Samuel of Derby. The will furnishes reasonable
evidence that the testator had personal knowledge of and affection for
his daughter-in-law, and that she and her children then lived some
distance remote from Roxbury. It is also evident that he knew the widow
and children of his "sonne, Edward" were not in needy circumstances, or
he would have not assumed the possibility of their not claiming the
legacies he left to them. As a quiet , Christian man, his long life came
to a close in 1672, leaving a good name as the inheiritance of the
thousands descended from him."

"Our Pioneer Ancestors" by Henry Earle Riggs, pub 1942 (Addtional
information, or information different than that of John Henry Wallce):

"From Woods "New England Prophet" published in 1634 is taken the
following description of Roxbury:
"A mile from Dorchester lieth Roxbury which is a fayre and handsome
country towne, the inhabitants of it being all very rich. This towne
lieth upon the Maine so that it is well wooded and watered having a clear
and fresh brook running through ye towne, up which, although there come
no alewives, yet there is a great store of smelts, and therefore it is
called Smelt Brooke. A quarter of a mile to the North of ye towne is
another river called Stony River, upon which is built a water milne. Here
is good ground for corns and meadow for cattel. Up westward from ye towne
it is something rocky, whence it hath ye name Roxbury. The inhabitants
hve fayre houses, store of cattel, impaled cornefields and fruitful
gardens. Here it is no harbor for ships because ye towne is seated in ye
bottom of a shallow bay which is made by ye necke of land on which Boston
is built, so that they can transport all their goods from ye ship in
boats from Boston which is ye nearest harbor."

Seventeen years later Edward Johnson tells us that Roxbury was "filled
with a very laborious people whose labors, the Lord had blessed, that in
room of dismall swamps and tearing bushes they have goodley fruit trees,
fruitful fields and gardens, their head of cows, oxen, and young cattel
of that kind about 350, and dwelling houses neere upon 120. Their streets
are large and some fayre houses, yet they have built their houses for
church assembly destitute and unbeautiful with other buildings."

According to the record of houses and lands in Roxbury there were, in
1654, between seventy and eighty homesteads and the owners of land
numbered ninety. The population numbered 700. The Roxbury Pioneers many
of them came from Nazing, a rural village of Essex County, England. Some
of the Roxbury men were from London, and a few from the west of England.
They were people of substance, many of them farmers skilled also in some
useful handicraft, not one it is said being of the poorer sort. They
struck root immediately and were enterprising, industrious and frugal. A
note of "Ye Estates and Personnes of Roxbury in 1639" the earliest list
of its inhabitants extent shows that Edward Riggs owned 40 acres of land.
The famous John Eliot was pastor of the Roxbury Church for many years
during the lifetime of Edward Riggs. (Riggs goes on to quote Wallace. . .
) then . . . We do not have the date of his death. His will was executed
September 2, 1670 and probated in 1672 so it is evident that he died in
the latter year at the age of 81 or 82. He outlived his son Edward about
four years. He was evidently a farmer. He took no prominent place as an
office holder in the Colony, but was evidently a quiet Christian man a a
good citizen.

Will
Entry 200-201 Vol.7 Suffolk County Massachusetts Probate Records - cited by Anderson

"In his will dated 2 September 1670 and proved 6 March 1671/2 "Edward Rigges of Roxbury...although very crazy and weak in body" bequeathed to "my daughter-in-law my son Edward Riggs his wife" 20s; to "my four grandchildren my son Edward's children" £4 (20s each); residue to "my daughter Mary Twitchell and her children"; to "my daughter Mary...a double portion namely twice so much of my estate as falls to any of her children"; to "my grandchild Elizabeth Allen" her portion paid soon after his death; "my grandchildren Joseph Twichell and Hanp [sic] Twichell" to receive their portions when they come of age or marry, in the meantime in the hands of Steven Williams; to "the rest of my grandchildren by my daughter Mary Twitchell" their portions when they come of age or at marriage; "loving friend John Steebins" executor; "loving friends Mr.Thomas Weld and Giles Parson"(sic) overseers. An undated codicil provides for the disposal of the estate in case of the early death of the grandchildren."[S41]

"The inventory of the estate of Edward Riggs was taken 5 March 1671/2 and totalled £128 7s., of which £93 was real estate: "his house and land sold in his lifetime," £80; and "more land sold by him," £13.[S41]
