RETIREMENT OF P.S. BRUFORD.

20 YEARS IN THE TAUNTON DIVISION.

Sergt. Walter BRUFORD, who joined the Somerset Constabulary at Glastonbury in 1898, as a constable, retired on Tuesday, having completed 29 years' service. For over 20 years, Sergt. BRUFORD has been stationed in the Taunton division, which period constitutes a record for the local Force. Mr. BRUFORD, both as constable and later as sergeant, earned for himself general respect and esteem, not only in Taunton but throughout the division. His courtesy and genial nature have been well known in spite of the repulsive nature of some of the duties he has had to carry out, and he will take with him into his retirement the good wishes of many friends both in and outside the constabulary.

AN EFFICIENT OFFICER.

Sergt. BRUFORD, when a young fellow of 18 years, was stationed at Chard in 1898, and was for some years under Supt. JENNINGS, who retired some time ago. Two years later he was transferred to Dulverton, and in 1901 he was moved to Stoke Lane, where he remained for two years and six months. East Pennard was his next station, later taking duty at West Camel for just over a year. In 1906 he came to Taunton, and served under Superintendents DURHAM and STOKER, whilst throughout the war he was orderly to the Chief Constable for the Division, and assisted in the office at Taunton. A year after the conclusion of the war, P.C. BRUFORD was promoted to sergeant, and sent to Bishop's Hull, where he remained until this week, when he handed in his uniform. He has proved an efficient and obliging officer, and was popular amongst the constables who came under his supervision.

Mr. and Mrs. W. BRUFORD are making their home in Taunton.
