    Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) John A. Scroggins, Jr., age 80, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2012 at his home in Opelika. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with service following at 3:00 p.m. at Farmville Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service in Farmville Cemetery.

    Mr. Scroggins was Top Sergeant in the US Army for 8 years until he was appointed by President Kennedy to Chief Warrant Officer. He also served with the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper.

    During his military career, Mr. Scroggins had tours throughout the U.S., Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Germany. After his retirement, he worked at Deering Milliken and Kimberly Clark in LaGrange, Georgia as plant supervisor. Then he continued his college education receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Troy State University. His career then turned to education where he began teaching at Southern Union Community College and Columbus Technical College. In the last years of his career, he was employed by Southern Electronics in Opelika. He was a member of the Opelika Lion’s Club and on the Board of Juvenile Volunteers.

    His greatest joy in life came by spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and close friends and continuing his many travels with them throughout the United States and Europe.

    He was a Deacon at Farmville Baptist Church and loved his church family.

    Mr. Scroggins was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Scroggins, Sr. of Shawmut, Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Betty Leonard Scroggins; his sister, Colleen Pearce of Pepperell, Massachusetts; his children, Patti Lunday (Robert) of Auburn, Alfred J. Scroggins (Lee Ann) of Opelika, Susie Cartledge (Jeff) of Columbus, Georgia, Nanci Andrews (Lee) of Auburn; eight grandchildren, Lauren and Clifton Odum of Auburn, Jordan and Will Scroggins of Opelika, Matt and Hunter Cartledge of Columbus, Georgia, Justin Snipes of Montgomery, and Tatum Andrews of Auburn.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Advantage of EAMC or Farmville Baptist Church Building Fund.
