    Deborah Scroggins Owens, 52, of Winchester, Virginia died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 in the Winchester Medical Center.

    Mrs. Owens was born February 23, 1956 in Winchester, Virginia, the daughter of William and Linda Bailey Scroggins.

    She was a supervisor with Thermo Fisher Diagnostics.

    She was a member of the Winchester Eagles Post #824 Ladies Auxiliary and the Strasburg Moose.

    She married David Edward Owens, Sr. on August 17, 1974 in Winchester, Virginia.

    Surviving with her husband are her mother of Harrisonburg, VA; a sister, Susan Scroggins of Winchester, VA; and a brother, Steven Scroggins of Strasburg, VA.

    A son, David Edward Owens, Jr. preceded her in death.

    Funeral services will be held 2:00 P. M. Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville with Elder Ray Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, VA.
    Pallbearers will be Gordon Owens, Gary Owens, Charles Owens, Russell Shipe, Connie Poston, and Gene Brown.

    The family will receive friends 7:00 – 9:00 P. M. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

    Marine Lance Cpl. David Edward Owens Jr. was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif. David played football, ran track and excelled at wrestling at James Wood High School. In his senior year, he placed fourth in the Commonwealth District Wrestling Tournament and sixth in the Northwest Region. After graduation in 2000, Owens joined the Marines. He hoped that it would lead to a career as a state trooper. Owens was shot in the chest during a gun battle in Baghdad. He died on the way to the hospital. He is remembered as a good athlete and a “quiet, decent guy. Jaye Copp, the high school’s head wrestling coach, said Owens was “a good team man. He did well, even surpassed his own ability, by giving it all he had. He had a good sense of humor and he was just a good, gentle person. This town was proud of him before he went and we’re even prouder of him now.”
