Mission Creek Presbyterian Church

Mission Creek Presbyterian Church was founded in 1872. At first the congregation met in the school house, but they soon decided to build a church. By May 1873, although the interior was not yet finished, the first sermon was preached in the new church by Rev. Marion Morrison of Amity, Iowa. Rev. Morrison preached each day for a week, and conducted communion and baptism before returning the 100 miles to Iowa on horseback.

A parsonage was constructed by July 1876, and Rev. Oscar Jenne served as pastor until March 1878. Rev. Marion Morrison returned to Mission Creek to serve as pastor from April 1878 until December 1890. Due to members moving away as well as some members' lack of attendence, Rev. Morrison's term began with only 7 regular church members, but as more settlers moved westward, church membership increased greatly. Three new congregations were formed as membership grew and members desired a church closer to where they lived.

The early years of the church were sometimes difficult as drought and grasshopper affected the crops. The winter of 1878/1879 was extremely cold - so cold that almost all the plaster fell off of the church walls. The plaster was repaired during the summer of 1879. Sometimes finances were tight and church employees were not paid their full salary.

By 1878, the settlement around the church at Mission Creek had grown to include several businesses and residences. In June of that year, a street was installed around the church lot. In the spring of 1890, all male church members were asked to install 2 hitching posts at the church to accommodate all the horses used to travel to Sunday services. In 1893 the women of the church raised $1000 to pay for an addition to the church. An addition to the parsonage was also made about this time.

During the early years of the church, church elders often helped to settle disputes between neighbors and to collect unpaid debts.

Rev. J.S. Colvin served as pastor from May 1892 until September 1907. Rev. Comin follwed Rev. Colvin as pastor.

On 23 January 1910, the church was destroyed by fire. A few days later a building committe was formed to construct a new church. The congregation met in a school until the new building was finished enough to allow use in August 1910. The new church was dedicated on 20 November 1910.

Rev. P.M. Dinsmore served as pastor from 1930 to 1940. These years were during the Depression and a period of drought, and Mr. Dinsmore often accepted less than his stipulated salary. Two Mission Creek pastors served as military chaplains. Rev. Thomas A. Hogg began his Army service as chaplain in 1942, and Rev. Neil Stevenson left Mission Creek to serve as Navy chaplain in 1957. Rev. Stephenson was still a Navy chaplain as of 1972.

A new parsonage was built in 1947, and the church was extensively remodeled in 1958. The interior of the church was reorganized and several additions were made that significantly altered the exterior of the church. An organ was also installed. The remodeled church was dedicated on 20 September 1959.
