On p. 9: "Zaccheus Gould, born about 1589, resided at Hemel Hempsted and Great Missenden, in England, came to New England about 1638, established himself finally at Topsfield, and died there ab. 1670. By his wife Phebe, who died 1663, Sept. 20, he had the following children:- ..."
- Gould, Benjamin Apthorp, The Family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield, 1895. On p. 21, 26-36: "Zaccheus Gould of Hemel Hempstead and later of Great Missenden, co. Bucks, where he was assessed in 1629. Born 1589 according to his own deposition; died 1668. Wife Phebe died at Topsfield 1663. His baptism probably recorded in the lost registers of Bovingdon."; "The earliest records of Zaccheus, which I have found in this country, indicate his presence at Weymouth. In 1639 Jeremy Gould sold land in Weymouth to Zaccheus Gould. Henry Russell of that place made his will 1639-40 Jan. 28 ... making Zaccheus Gould and others the overseer of his will and of his daughter. ... the earliest indication of his establishment at what was afterwards Topsfield is found in the action in 1644 upon his petition to the General Court, for a village to be incorporated in that part of Ipswich where he dwelt. ... During the years between 1639 and 1644 Zaccheus appears to have dwelt at Lynn; and in 1640 he owned a mill on the Saugus River ... at a session of the General Court held at Boston 1650 Oct. 18: 'In answer to the request of Zaccheus Gould and William Howard of Topsfield, the Court doth grant that Topsfield shall henceforth be a town, and have power within themselves to order all civil affairs, as other towns have.' ... In 1651 he took the oath of fidelity, Sept. 30, but he never became a 'freeman' of the colony, for which position it was necessary for him to become a member of the church. ... That Zaccheus was born in 1589 appears from the record of a deposition made by him at Salem Court, 1661 March 26, stating that he was then seventy-two years old. His death must have occurred between 1668 March 30 and 1668 Nov. 13; for on the former of these dates he acknowledged the conveyance of land to Thomas Perkins, and on the latter, there is record of a division of 'the Common, on the Salem side of the river,' (now Middleton), in which it is stated that he was dead. ... Zaccheus Gould became probably the largest land owner in the region; his property, at the time of his death, being estimated at not less than 3000 acres, extending over a large tract in what was then known as Rowley Village, but which was incorporated as a separate town, under the name of Boxford ... seems to have been a man of exceptional liberality in his theological ideas: maintaining friendly relations with Quakers and with Baptists, although both were proscribed."
- Lewis, Alonzo, & James R. Newhall, History of Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, 1865. On p. 250, "1659 ... The General Court had passed some very severe laws against the people called Friends or Quakers, forbidding any even to admit them into their houses, under a penalty of forty shillings an hour. Mr. Zacheus Gould had offended against this order, for which he was arraigned by the Court. On the 25th of November, 'the deputies having heard of what Zacheus Gould hath alleged in Court, in reference to his entertainment of Quakers, do think it meet that the rigor of the law in that case provided, be exercised upon him, but considering his ingenious confession, and profession of his ignorance of the law; and he also having long attended the Court, do judge that he shall only be admonished for his offence by the governor, and so be dismissed the court, and all with reference to the consent of our honored magistrates hereto.' This decision of the deputies was sent to the magistrates, and returned with this endorsement: 'The magistrates consent not thereto.' So it is probable that Mr. Gould was compelled to pay his fine. [The Court ordered that Mr. Gould pay a fine of three pounds. But the fine was remitted, 31 May, 1660, in consideration of the great loss by fire, which he had recently sustained.]"
