Charles Tubbs

        Dear sir; as i have the record of my fathers families ages birth and deaths as near as i can, ready to send you and as the brothers and sisters think they have not much of biographical interest to write i thought i would give you a short history of each one whether you made use of it or not. William Tubbs was married to Jane Wilbur in 1856 and being of a roving disposition left Holly the same year went to St paul minnesota staid one year and six months then came back to indepence Oakland Co where in Oct 1858 his son Wilber Tubbs was born in the spring of 1859 went to monroe, mich where his second son was born Samuel Tubbs in 1861 stayed there a short time went from there to Champlain Illinois where his daughter Harriet Tubbs was born in 1863 the spring of 1865 came back to Holly where he died the same year

        Butler S Tubbs lived on his fathers farm until the year 1862 when he enlisted in the war of the rebelion Aug 2 1862 in 7, mich Cavalry he was in the battle of Gettysburg July 2, 1863 Williamsport July 6, 63 Hagerstown July 10, 63 Falling Waters July 14,63 Reblys ford Sep 19,63 Brandy station Oct 11, 63 Buckland mills Oct 19, 1863 Wilderness May 6 & 7 1864 where he received a lieutenants commission discharged March 10 1866 came back to mich and on July 3 1867 married Sarah Bell at the home of his sister Caroline Green in township of independence- moved on a farm in Tyrone Genessee Co mi where he lived until 3 years ago when he traded farms and moved to the town of Rose Oakland Co where he now resides

        Now this is all of any interest i can think of in regard to my fathers family my brothers and sisters seem to think as i am the oldest i ought to remember most i hope what little i have written will help you some you wanted me to write about my Grandfather it is not much i can say i have herd him say when i was a child and my father has told me many times that he was six years old when American Independance was declared and that he was in the war of 1812 the most i can remember i seeing him about on the farm the day he died i remember well there was a freshet in Chemung river there was a cove back of his house he was working in some drift wood that lodged there when he fell and hurt his back he only lived a short time he was buried in the Southport burying ground in the north east corner he had a tomb stone it may be gone now

        I should think my uncle James Tubbs that lives at Loomis Mich could tell more about his father as he lived at home with his parents for a time after he was married now i cant think of anything mor to say if i can help you any farther let me know my mother never said any thing about any of her people i dont know why she had some relatives that lived in Chemung below Elmira but i have not heard from them in forty years so dont know whether there is any of them left or not you will find my fathers grandchildren on the other side i hope you let me know if you get this and if it will do you any good.

I (Geo. W. Tubbs) moved from Underhill VT in 1840 to Oswego NY--lived there until 1844 when I sailed the North River and Coasts, in lumber and coal for 9 years. Took up my residence in 1846 at Elizabeth NJ--in July 1878 moved up to Ticonderoga Essex Co NY--in 1881 (Nov) moved to Elizabeth NJ--in April 1886 moved to Berlin Rens Co NY--Since 1878 have been suprintendant as an occupation--Have held the position of a local Preacher in the ME Church since 1859 and 60--first as Exhorter for about 4 years; then Local Preacher until 1880 when I was regularly ordained a local Deacon by Bishop Jesse L Peck at Burlington VT at the annual Session of the Troy Conference of which I am at present under its jurisdiction but only as a local preacher with Deacons order--Am generally in the work upon call only--not regularly--Having been away from home so much in early life, and not given to keeping records much. I am but a poor dependence but willing to do all I can; and confess to a love for history--If that I could go to Essex VT, and among my relatives of advanced age: I no doubt could gather much that would prove valuable, as in that case I should copy family Records and at Montpelier search the State Records: but I am not able so to do: but as to the time, I could spare about a week sometime this month only--Expenses would consist of car fares: and where I might be compelled to employ a team for an hour or a Day--I do not covet the undertaking and as simply to go: I would not, even if expenses were offered but I perhaps could do much more than you--If my sister Mrs Wellington were there, She might do much but money could not tempt her to go--I think she intends to go there this coming summer: before she goes to Florida--So I may be able to get any information at any time: I shall give it you as I get it--I doubt if anyone of my brothers or sisters can give you any more information than I, except it be my oldest sister Mrs. Wellington--I will write her in a day or two and send you her reply when I get it--I send my card to you: and if not too much to ask, would like yours in return: in order to see at least: the "shadow" of my correspondent--If it is not better looking than the one I send; call on me for the postage--If I should go to VT, I think it would exhaust the record of Tubbs, or lead up to it in such manner as to make the documentary evidence complete--If Byon[?] Stevens[?] and Aunt Wealthy be living: doubtless their family chain could be found--Uncle John Tubbs has children still living at or near Essex VT--Fredrick Tubbs lived opposite Uncle John Tubbs in Essex when I was about 10 or 11 years old and lived with Uncle John a year--He was a cousin of Uncle Johns--that is all I know of that family--Fred had boys of my age--dont know their names--
