Malissa Delaney Family

Malissa Delaney was one of two daughters of Daniel and Manerva Delaney, born in February 1858 in Tennessee. According to her niece Maude Mayton, she never married.

In the 1880 Roane Co. census she was living in the household of her parents, along with two boys, Willie, 6, and Columbus, 4, who were listed as grandsons.

In the 1900 Morgan Co. census, she was living with son William and his wife, Paralee, in Petros, Morgan Co., TN, where Malissa's mother Minerva died in 1915. Also in the household were her sons Columbus P. and Charley and daughter Matilda. The information given to the censustaker said that she was widowed and had had eight children, five still living.

When Columbus and William registered for the WWI draft in 1918, Columbus also was married; his wife was named Bell. The men were of medium height and build, and both had blue eyes. Columbus was a blacksmith, for possibly Foddenstock (sp ?) Coal Co in Petros. William's occupation is hard to read, but he was working for Big Brushy Fuel in Petros. In the 1920 census he listed coal miner as his trade.

It appears that Charley may have joined the Navy. The photo displayed here of "Chas. Delaney" in a sailor's uniform was in my Grandparent's photo album, along with the displayed picture of Willie Delaney. In his picture Charles is wearing what appears to be a wedding ring.

By 1920 Malissa was in a household of her own, and had her daughter "Tilda" Delaney living with her, along with a granddaughter Ossie Delaney. Columbus and William still lived in Petros as well. Malissa died 8 Oct. 1928 in Morgan Co.
