The Theater Royal.
1823 February 12, Accident at the Theatre Royal the play "Tom and Jerry" was up to the second scene of the first act when a gas leak was discovered. There was some smoke and flames although the flames were soon extinguished there were cries of "Fire, Fire, save your lives!" Mr. De Camp, the manager tried to restore order but there was a rush for the door and people were trampled and suffocated in the rush to get out of the theatre. The following is a list of those who perished: - Mrs. Robinson, wife of Mr. Riddell Robinson, builder Westgate street; Mary Johnson age 16 years, milliner, of the Manor Chare; Isabella Parkinson, age 11 years adopted child of Mrs. Green Pilgrim Street; Thomas Handyside, bookbinder; and John Jonathan Wilkinson, son of Mr. Wilkinson veterinary surgeon, Pilgrim Street, all of Newcastle. Dorothy Heaton age 17 years, daughter of Mr. George Heaton, tailor; and Mr. John Edwards, both of Gateshead.
1836 June 26, the last performance in the Theatre Royal, Mosley Street, Newcastle, took place before a crowd of audience, when the comedy of "Sweethearts and Wives" was performed followed by a petite comedy entitled "Picturesque" the theatre was first opened on Jan 21 1788 and Mr Grainger commenced to pull it down on Saturday, November 5th, 1836 when the principal portion of the site was thrown in the Grey Street.
1837 Febuary 20, The New Theatre Royal, Newcastle, was opened for the first time by Mr Montague penley with "The Merchant of Venice," and "to the young widow," and was attended by a very crowded audience, the principal part has been taking by Messrs a R. Young, Lacy, Lesley, Corrie, and Miss.R. Penley. An opening address was written by Thomas Doubleday esq., was delivered by Mr.Griffiths.

The New Tyne Theatre.
New Tyne Theater built 1867, designed by Parnell, plays and Sunday lectures, 1919 Stoll picture house and the first picture house in Newcastle to show talking movies.
At The Opening Night 23 September 1867 Mr. George Stanley at the opening address thanked the people who built the theatre, Architect Mr. Parnell Messer's. J. & W. Lowery and Walter Scott for their workman like manner in which they fulfilled their contract. To the tradesmen engaged in the erection of the building Messers. John Abbot and Co., Gateshead, Messer's. Richardson, and Co, painters and decorators, Mr. Moor cabinetmaker, Mr. Preston slater: Messer's W. H. Walker & sons Percy Iron Works, Mr. Chandler, upholsterer; Messers. Walker & Emley, Neville Iron Works; Mr. Alder, smith; and Messers. Russell and Sons gasfitters and plumbers. All these gentlemen have cheerfully exerted themselves to complete their different parts of the work in time. He also thanked the intelligent foremen of the contractors, Mr. John Mitchell, Mr. Aitken, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Grisdale, and Mr. Nichol, for their indefatigable labours.
