Bristol Historical Society Museum

The society has a collection of local artifacts in a restored 18th-century farmhouse and a 19th-century barn in a meticulously landscaped setting. Exhibits change annually. Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History

The Henry Sheldon Museum serves as the collecting institution for Middlebury history as well as Addison County history. The collection housed in the 1829 Judd-Harris House highlights the region's early settlers and important military, industrial and agricultural past. The Research Center contains thousands of manuscripts, photographs and ephemera. An active program of workshops, lectures, events and other activities is offered throughout the year. The Canaan Historical Society occupies the second floor of a Greek Revival building constructed in 1846 for a stop on the Franklin, New Hampshire to Montreal stage route. The Canaan Historical Society is developing a local heritage museum on the 2nd floor of the library. The Greek Revival structure was built in 1846 as a stage stop on the route from Franklin, N.H., to Montreal. Local legend is that the house was the last stop on the Connecticut Valley route of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, but no proof has been established. The Noyes House, a two story federal style brick mansion built by the Safford Family in the early 19th century, was the first location to be settled in the village of Morrisville. Exhibits of local and regional history, photographs, furnishings, toys, household and farm tools, quilts, costumes, military artifacts, souvenir pitchers, Toby mugs, and other artifacts related to industry, home life and leisure activities in the 19th and 20th centuries, can be viewed throughout 17 rooms and a carriage barn. Research archives and an extensive
photograph collection available for public viewing. Activities include guided tours, historical programs, special exhibits and an annual open house featuring the Morrisville Military Band. The Stowe History Room is located in the Akeley Memorial Building, which is the town hall. The society has also restored the one-room Bloody Brook schoolhouse that is located next to the Helen Day Art Center. The museum is owned and operated by the Orleans County Historical Society, which in 1916 rescued the four-story granite building from demolition and has since used it to display collections of 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century New England furniture, paintings, decorative arts, tools, local folk art, folk technology, and a small research library. There are 23 rooms of permanent exhibits including 11 "town rooms" representing 11 of the 18 towns in the county. Today, the museum complex includes the Cyrus Eaton House (1834), the Alexander Twilight Homestead (c. 1830), and 55 acres of open land. Activities include guided tours of the museum, annual antique engine shows, and Old Stone House Day (Sun. nearest Bennington Battle Day, which is Aug 16). This 1909 Carnegie library building contains a museum relating to the history of Rockingham and surrounding areas and extensive genealogical resources for Rockingham and Bellows Falls. In a large room above the library, there are Civil War items, costumes, textiles, glass photographic plates, postcards, Hetty Greene memorabilia, and a stereopticon slide collection. The museum is located on the ground floor of the former Congregational church, built in 1836. The sanctuary on the 2nd floor has a beautiful tracker organ installed in 1900 and still used for concerts and weddings. Collections range from children's playthings, farm implements, and tools to a completely furnished Victorian parlor and kitchen, local photographs, maps, genealogical records, and other documents. This 19th-century mansion overlooks downtown Springfield, with views of Main Street, the rapids on the Black River, and the locations of early industries. It is now a museum and gallery with exhibits of primitive portraits by 19th-century artists including Horace Bundy, Asahel Powers, and Aaron Dean Fletcher; pewter; Bennington pottery; and Joel Ellis dolls and toys made in local factories. The 18th-century barn was recently reconstructed. With the addition of the old forge in 1972, the complex houses an extensive collection of historical items, including Civil War memorabilia, a children's room, tools, clothing and textiles, a library with archival photos and genealogies, and the last panther killed in Weathersfield (1867).
