NOTE: The James M. Viers listed above is not James McClintock Viers (even though the ages at death are similar. James McClintock Viers died in 1871 and the James M. Viers noted in the list above apparently had the birth date listed in the date of death column as it shows 3-19-38 and it shows burial in the year 1903.... Edward H. Viers (the purchaser of the above cemetery section) was a son of Dorsey W. Viers (both names listed above). It should be noted that Dorsey's brother, Bazzel, took care of Dorsey in his final years, even though Dorsey was quite able to get around up to just shortly before his death.

The following is a layout of the headstones and the listing of locations of those in the Viers cemetery section of the Glendale Cemetery, Akron, Summit County, Ohio (originally named the Akron Rural Cemetery when established in 1839). Information gathered by Mrs. Marlene Diefendorf of Akron, Ohio on 11 May 1992 as an excellent genealogical researcher I engaged to do Viers research in that area.

List: Mary M. Rice; James McClintock Viers; Octavia Viers; Eliza Viers; J. and E. Viers; Angeline Cline; William Cline; Artie Viers; Schuyler T. Viers

Union Cemetery

Union Cemetery is located in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio on U.S. Route 22-Ohio State Route 43. It was incroporated "not for profit" in 1854. Prior to this, burial was on grounds donated by Bazeleel Wells-where Grant School now stands; and, where the intersection of Fourth and Fifth streets meet. Wells gave ground for both the Presbyterian and Methodists. As the town expanded, responsible citizens of the community met in 1853 and began to plan the Union Cemetery. Over the years the cemetery expanded into many acres of beautiful burial grounds. At Union Cemetary & Botanical Gardens one can enjoy the natural arboretum of trees, shrubs, and more than 100 species of flowers, plus a distant view of two states. Also see historic headstones of Jefferson County.

The first adult burial was William Donaldson on October 10, 1855. The dificult task of removing te old cemeteries began January 11, 1856 with the removal of John, the father of William Donaldson. Observing the list above of Viers interred at the Union Cemetery, it is obvious that at least eight of the named persons were moved from the old cemetery sites to the newer and present Union Cemetery, locating in Section D #9. (William E. Croskey of Richmond, Ohio supplied this information to me in 1992)...The address of Union Cemetery is 1720 West Market St., Steubenville, Ohio.
