Ancestors of Roberson Cloer



Generation One


1. Roberson1 CLOER was born circa 1812 at North Carolina. He married Margret Lavina Byers circa 1839 at North Carolina. He died on 18 May 1892 at Iredell Co, North Carolina.1 Within probate records concerning Roberson Cloer, dated 8 August 1892, papers are located on a suit brought forth by M. E. Hicks. Roberson died intestate leaving the land in question, some 8 1/3 acres "more or less", cleared for cultivation, and a one room "pine pole cabin without a chimney". He had cultivated a large orchard of peaches and apples. It seems that originally he had signed a $50 note, but had paid $31 against that note, but Roberson had insisted he had made improvements to the land totaling about $200. Roberson stated he had gone to Hicks several times with the balance due on the note, but Hicks would not accept it, stating he had no intention of making a deed to the land in question. Other papers within the packet show Roberson's signature dated 11 July 1891, seen as " Roberson Clore". This land was known to be located within Sharpesburg Township, in Iredell County, adjoining the lands of Dr. J.E. King and R.B. Dobson.
On the 21st day of August, 1891, Roberson said he was unable to "give sureties or make the deposit required by law to enable him to defend his rights in the above action", therefore praying he "may be allowed to defend in said action as pauper."
He appeared on the census of 22 Aug 1850 at Alexander Co, North Carolina; Roberson Cloer, 35, Lavina, 28, Wash, 10, Jane, 9, Mary, 7, Robert, 5, Sarah, 3, and Julianna, 3/12.2 He appeared on the census of 12 Oct 1860 at "So. of the River", Liberty Hill PO, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Roberson Cloer, 50, Lavina, 55, Elizabeth J., 20, Mary A., 17, Robert, 15, Sarah M., 12, Julia A., 9, Nancy L., 7, Salina C., 5, and Joseph M., 3.3 He appeared on the census of 12 Aug 1870 at Sharpesburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Robt Cloar, 60, Martha, 55, Catherine, 16, Salina, 13, Rebecca, 10.4 He was also known as Robison Clore.5 He appeared on the census of 8 Jun 1880 at Sharpesburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Robison, aged 64, Margaret L., 54, Jane, 37, Julia A., 33, Dovey R., 17, and two grandsons, Washington B., 6, and Falls L., 1.6

Margret Lavina BYERS was born in Jun 1826 at North Carolina.7 She died after 21 Jun 1900 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. To this point (1993), there has been no definite connection to the Byers of Iredell County, although it is most assuredly there. In 1809, papers show Thomas, Robert, Joseph, James Smith, Jane, Amelia Byers, married sisters Esther Falls and Polly Simonton gave to Washington Byers, their youngest brother, 386 acres of land, as their father had not provided for him before his death. While Falls and Washington were names used often in this part of the county, I feel strongly Lavina was related to this family. She appeared on the census of 21 Jun 1900 in the household of Bam Washington Cloer at Concord, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Balm Cloer was single, 25, and living with his mother, Sarah Martha Cloer, 53, and his grandmother, Lavina Byers Cloer, 73. Lavina had mothered 10 children, 8 of whom were still living.8

2. Falls Washington2 CLOER (Roberson1) was born on 15 Sep 1836 at North Carolina.15,16 He was born in Sep 1839 at North Carolina.17,18 He married Almeda Sharpe, daughter of Fieldon Sharpe and Sarah Allen, circa 1859 at North Carolina; info from 1900 census Knobs, Yadkin Co, NC. He died on 2 Jan 1925 at Yadkin Co, North Carolina, at age 85.19,20 He was buried on 3 Jan 1925 at Falls Creek Baptist Church, Jonesville, Yadkin Co, North Carolina.21
He appeared on the census of 6 Aug 1870 at Concord Twp., Iredell Co, North Carolina; Falls Clore, 29, Almeda, 35, Victoria, 9, John, 5, and Henry, 2.22 He appeared on the census of 1900 at Knobs, Yadkin Co, North Carolina; Washington F. Cloer and his wife Almeda, had been then married 41 years. Almeda was listed as the mother of 7 children, with 6 still living. In the same household was son Henry Cloer and his wife of 6 years, Rebecca. Falls, Almeda and Rebecca could all read, but only Falls could write. Falls Washington Cloer was renting his farmhouse.
According to the book, "The Civil War and Yadkin County, North Carolina", he had two sons who married in Yadkin in 1900: Eddy and James. It is more likely these were grandchildren. They both married women named Benge. On page 166 of the book, a table listing veterans and/or widows who drew pensions, was W.F. Cloer. It also mentioned "helpless, burns". The info indicates he served in Company E, 49th Regiment. The writer will have to try to substantiate this with records. He appeared on the census of 20 Apr 1910 at Knobs, Yadkin Co, North Carolina; Falls, aged "70", and wife Media, "82", were living with the son Henry and his family. They had been married 40 years, with six children, five still living.23 As of 1925, he was also known as Falls Chlore.24

Almeda SHARPE was born on 8 Aug 1826 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; death certificate 1924, Yadkin Co, #376. The year of 1828 is also confirmed by the 1910 census saying she was aged 82.25 She was born in Aug 1832 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; info from 1900 census Knobs, Yadkin Co, NC. She died on 12 Dec 1924 at Knobs, Yadkin Co, North Carolina, at age 98; The death certificate states she was aged 98 yrs, 3 mos 20 days, and that the death was "sudden."26 She was buried on 20 Dec 1924 at Falls Creek Church, Jonesville, Yadkin Co, North Carolina; The undertaker was E. Hayes of Elkin, NC.27 As of 12 Dec 1924, she was also known as Meeda Chlore.28

4. Robert H.2 CLOER (Roberson1) was born circa 1845 at North Carolina. He married Julia A. Goble on 14 Jun 1866 at Iredell Co, North Carolina.

5. Mary Ann2 CLOER (Roberson1) was born in Jan 1845 at North Carolina. She married William Paley Sharpe, son of Fieldon Sharpe and Sarah Allen, on 22 Mar 1866 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. She married William Paley Sharpe, son of Fieldon Sharpe and Sarah Allen, on 5 May 1866 at Concord Township, Iredell Co, North Carolina.31 She died on 30 Oct 1930 at Concord, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 85; death certificate, Vol 16, page 127 (1930), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. She was buried on 30 Oct 1930 at Trinity Methodist Church, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
She appeared on the census of 3 Apr 1930 at Concord Township, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Mary Sharpe, aged 80, and a widow was living with her son Charles and his family.32 Mary Ann's obituary was printed in the The Landmark [Statesville, NC] on Thursday, October 30, 1930. "Mrs. W.P. Sharpe Dies at Stony Point - The funeral service for Mrs. Mary A. Sharpe , who died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock at the home of her son, Mr. Charles Sharpe, at Stony Point, was held this morning at 11 o'clock at Trinity Methodist church, and interment was in the church cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. P.R. Rayle and Rev. Clyde Yates.
The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Blake McCarty, who was assisted by Mrs. Lon. Lytton, Mrs Dekalb Kennerly, Mrs. K.L. Miller and Mrs. Daisy Clodfelter.
Mrs. Sharpe was the widow of the late W.P. Sharpe, and was 86 years old. Surviving are two sons: Mr. William Sharpe of Eufola, Route 1, and Mr. Charles Sharpe, of Stony Point; also three daughters - Mrs. Lewis Lambert, and Mrs. Mary Sharpe, of Statesville; and Mrs. Juliebell Gregory of Mooresville. A number of grandchildren also survive."
Her death certficate lists her parents as Robinson Clore and Vina Byers, both born Iredell County. The funeral was held by Johnson's Funeral Home.33


William Paley Sharpe

William Paley SHARPE was born on 25 Aug 1841 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. He died on 24 Jan 1930 at 509 Armfield Street "at 6 o'clock" Friday night, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 88; death certificate, Vol 16, page 412 (1930), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. His death certificate lists his parents as Fredman Sharpe and Sallie Allen, from information given by his wife Mary Ann.34 He was buried on 25 Jan 1930 at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina. Much of what we know about William Paley Sharpe comes from military records. He was 6' tall with dark hair and complexion with blue eyes. He had been a Private in Company E with the 49th Regiment of the Infantry during the Civil War. He had enlisted on 26 February 1862 from Iredell County. During his service he was hospitalized at the Episcopalian Church Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia from 24 August 1862 until 25 December 1862 for a fever.
William Paley Sharpe deserted on 19 July 1863 but was returned to confinement on 22 October 1863. His name appears as signature to an oath of amnesty on 29 January 1865 at City Point, Virginia.
He appeared on the census of 4 Aug 1870 at Concord, Iredell Co, North Carolina; W. P. Sharpe, 29, works on farm, Mary, 21, William 3, and Lillia, 2/12 born in June of 1870. Cora Lee's birthdate is put in question here.35 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Sharpesburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina.36 He appeared on the census of 1900 at Sharpesburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina; The 1900 census, Sharpsburg [Bryantsville Div] lists William and Mary married 43 yrs (obviously an error), and Mary as 35 years old, born Jan 1865, mother of 6 children, all 6 living. Cora was listed as born June 1869 and Puella as born May 1881. The person giving the information to the census taker was not very knowledgable in this area. Also in the household were Lawrence b. Jun 1884, and granddaughters, Mertie b. Sept 1896 and Gracie, b. March 1897. William could neither read or write, but Mary and Cora could both read.37 He appeared on the census of May 1910 at Bethany Twp., Iredell Co, North Carolina; William P. Sharpe, aged 69, and wife Mary, 64, married for 42 years, had six children, five still living. Daughter Puella, 24, was there with her three children, Gracie, 13, Olly, 8 and Luther, 5. By this time, Gracie could read, along with her grandmother, Mary Ann Cloer Sharpe. Mary Puella could not read or write.38 Taxes for 1919 were $3.31 based on a property value of $205 -- Taxes were $3.28 with an extra $ .03 added, no reason given. He appeared on the census of 14 Jan 1920 at Bethany Twp., Iredell Co, North Carolina; Paley Sharpe, 77, Mary A., 72, daughter Puella, 37, Ila (? - had to be Ollie), 17, Luther 15, and Mettie E. (had to be Mary Edison), 5. Ollie was listed as daughter, but obviously is granddaughter. The last two entries were listed as grandson and granddaughter. Neither William Paley or Puella could read or write, but Mary could read. Ollie could read and write, but Luther could not.39

Sarah Martha2 CLOER (Roberson1) was born in May 1847 at North Carolina; Since the 1850 census indicated b. 1847, and the 1900 census indicated born May 1847, it is likely the secondary date as a birth: 25 May 1850, really means she was born 25 May 1847.40,41 She was born on 25 May 1850 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. She died on 31 Aug 1932 at Sharpsburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 85; death certificate, Vol 18, page 247 (1932), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. She was buried on 1 Sep 1932 at Trinity Methodist Church, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
She appeared on the census of 21 Jun 1900 in the household of Bam Washington Cloer at Concord, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Balm Cloer was single, 25, and living with his mother, Sarah Martha Cloer, 53, and his grandmother, Lavina Byers Cloer, 73. Lavina had mothered 10 children, 8 of whom were still living.42 She appeared on the census of 29 Apr 1910 at Concord Twp, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Sarah Cloer, 59, said she had one marriage, and one child, still living. She was living with her only son, "Bammer W. Cloer" and his wife Carrie Myers.43

11. Dovie Rebecca2 CLOER (Roberson1) was born on 22 Jul 1861 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. She married Charles M. Bower circa 1884 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; Charles and Dovie had been married 26 years.48 She died on 17 Jun 1922 at age 60. She was buried at Trinity Methodist Church, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
She appeared on the census of 28 Jan 1920 at 212 W. Front Street, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Rebecca Bowers, aged 50, "mother-in-law", was living with Clyde Lazenby, 29 and his wife Mattie, 27.49

Charles M. BOWER was born on 30 Jun 1838 at England. He died on 25 Oct 1931 at age 93; info from gravestone. He died on 17 Nov 1931 at Fallstown, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 93; Iredell Co. death records. He was buried in 1931 at Trinity Methodist Church, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina. He appeared on the census of 19 Apr 1910 at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Charles was 63, Dovie, 49, son-in-law Clyde Lazenby was 22 and his wife Mattie was 20. Dovie had borne two children, and only one was living.50 He appeared on the census of 21 Apr 1930 in the household of Clyde Lazenby at Chambersburg, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Clyde Lazenby, 41 and Mattie, 41, had living with them her father, Charles M. Bower, 91.51

13. Katherine Victoria3 CLOER (Falls2, Roberson1) was born on 20 Aug 1860 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; date from obituary. She married William Lambert on 28 Dec 1887 at Concord Township, Iredell Co, North Carolina.54 She died on 21 Feb 1950 at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 89; Iredell County Deaths. She was buried at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Trinity Methodist Church.
She appeared on the census of 23 Apr 1910 at Concord Twp., Iredell Co, North Carolina; Victoria, a widow aged 55 years, was living with her son, James and his new wife, Minerva. She was still caring for her younger children: Dora, 14 and Ronnie, 8. Victoria had borne four children three still living. Along the census page it indicated they were living "on the waters of Sharpe Creek."55

15. Henry R.3 CLOER (Falls2, Roberson1) was born in May 1868 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; info from 1900 census Knobs, Yadkin Co, NC. He married Rebecca Dishman circa 1894 at North Carolina. He died in 1947 at North Carolina.
He appeared on the census of 1900; The 1900 census for Knobs township in Yadkin County listed Henry with his parents as well as his own wife of 6 years. Henry could neither read or write. He appeared on the census of 20 Apr 1910 at Knobs, Yadkin Co, North Carolina; Henry Cloer [enumerated as Cloe in the HQ Index], 38, Becca D., 30, Willie, 14, Washington, 5 and Falls, "father", 70, Media, 82. Falls and Almeda had been married 40 yrs, having had six children, five living.67 He appeared on the census of 19 Jan 1920 at Knobs, Yadkin Co, North Carolina; H. Clore, 51, Rebecca, 41, Willie, 17 and Washington, 12.68

He married Jacqueline Benge, daughter of John Benge and Almeda Hamrick, on 24 Feb 1900 at Yadkin Co., North Carolina; e-mail from [email protected], 19 Jan 2002. He was buried on 7 Sep 1940 at Houstonville Moravian Church Cemetery, Houstonville, North Carolina.

24. William Monroe3 SHARPE (Mary2 Cloer, Roberson1) was born on 8 Jun 1867 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; Family Bible owned by Pam Wood Waugh, 1994. He married Laura Jane Sipes on 19 Mar 1892.124 He died on 7 Mar 1955 at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 87; death certificate, Vol 41 page 123 (1955), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. He was buried on 9 Mar 1955 at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Shiloh, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
He appeared on the census of 1930 at Shiloh, Iredell Co, North Carolina.125 At the time of his death, William Monroe Sharpe had been in Davis Hospital in Statesville. Johnson Funeral Home made the arrangements for his burial at Bethel Methodist Church in Shiloh Town, Statesville. The informant was Jim Sharpe, Rt 6, Statesville.

Laura Jane SIPES was born on 9 Oct 1873 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. She died on 18 Apr 1938 at Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 64. She was buried at Shiloh, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery.

25. Cora Lee3 SHARPE (Mary2 Cloer, Roberson1) was born on 8 Jun 1870 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; Family Bible owned by Pam Wood Waugh, 1994. She was born in 1872; death certificate, Vol 23, page 342 (1937), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. She married Louis Lambert after 4 Dec 1900 at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; The announcement that a marriage license had been issued to Louis Lambert and Cora Sharpe appeared in the newspaper on 4 December 1900.165 She died on 15 Mar 1937 at Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 66; death certificate, Vol 23, page 342 (1937), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. She was buried on 17 Mar 1937 at Trinity Methodist Church, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Cora's death certificate states that she was living at Hill Street in Statesville, the widow of Lewis Lambert. Her obituary [The Landmark, 18 March 1937] states she died at her home on the old Charlotte Road. "Surviving were four daughters, Mrs. Will Gregory, Mrs. Howard Lambert, Mrs. Fred Gaines and Mrs. Ed King, and one son, Mr. Lawrence Lambert, all of Statesville. Two sisters, Mrs. Puella Sharpe and Mrs. Ed Gregory, of Statesville; two brothers, Mr. Charles Sharpe, of Barium Springs, and Mr. Will Sharpe, of Catawba, also survive." The funeral was held at the home of her son, Lawrence, on Hill Street.
As of Aug 1870, she was also known as Lillia Sharpe.

Louis LAMBERT was born circa 1870 at North Carolina.166 He died before 1937. He appeared on the census of Feb 1920 at Mocksville-Statesville Highway, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Louis Lambert, 50, Cora, 38, Lawrence, 15, Everette (dau), 14, Mary N. 10, and a dau (Eva) , 7. His son-in-law, Will Gregory and their family were living with them.167

26. Julia Belle3 SHARPE (Mary2 Cloer, Roberson1) was born in 1872 at Iredell Co, North Carolina; Family Bible owned by Pam Wood Waugh, 1994. She has also be reported to have been born Jun 1876 Iredell Co, Quebec.172 She married Amos Edward Gregory before 1898 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. She died on 17 Mar 1959 at Mooresville, Iredell Co, North Carolina; death certificate, Vol 45, page 175 (1959), Vital Statistics Iredell Co. She was buried on 19 Mar 1959 at Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery, Statesville, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
Julia's death certificate states that information was given by Bub Gregory, most likely one of her sons. Arangements were conducted by Calvin Funeral Home in Mooresville. She had been a resident of Route 2, Mooresville.

Amos Edward GREGORY was born in Apr 1875 at North Carolina.173 He died before 1959. Her daughter, Virginia, was Executrix. Others mentioned were her daughter, Marjorie Elizabeth Waugh Ceruti, and her grandchildren, David Alvin, Randolph Stepen and Cheryl Esther. The Will was admitted to Probate 13 August 1979.

George Francis WAUGH was born on 8 Apr 1888 at Manchester, Hillsborough Co, New Hampshire. He died on 12 Jun 1932 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, Ohio, at age 44.
