The Yorkshire visitation in 1665 found that the family had at that time [1665] resided there for six continuous generations. The Remington family consisting of several branches, still [in 1907] continues to reside in York and Lancaster Counties, England.

The Arms borne by the Remington's of Lund, County York, and the Remington's of Crow Trees, Melling, County Lancaster, are blazoned as follows; " Barry of twelve Arg, and Az, a bend gules, Crest; A hand erect holding a broken tilting spear all ppr," The family of Broomhead

Eliphalet King, The name of ELIPHALET is found as a son of David in the Bible in 2nd Samuel-5: 16 and 1st Chronicles, Chapter 14, verse 7. Eliphalet King fought in the French and Indian Wars and was one of the first to take up arms against England in the defense of the liberties of the American Colonies with 4 of his brothers. On the first day of May 1775 he was commissioned by "Jonathan Trumbull Esq. Captain General and Governor in Chief in and over His Majesty's English Colony of Connecticut, in New England in America" as Ensign of the Tenth Company in the Second Reg. of the Inhabitants, Enlisted and assembled for the

Special Defense and Safety of His Majesty's said Colony. The Capt. Of

The tenth Company was Oliver Hanchet who was also from Suffield, CT.

Under his commission as Ensign Eliphalet King fought "His Majesty's

"Troops at the battle of Bunker Hill on June 17,1775, and thereafter

Was in the expedition of Gen. Benedict Arnold against Quebec Sep-Dec. 1775, For an official report there of mentions Eliphalet King as one of those who lost their guns. In that campaign Capt. Oliver Hanchet and one of his Lieutenants were taken prisoner by the British, his other Lieutenant was killed and more than one-half of the members of their Company were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. Eliphalet King escaped with only the loss of his gun.

On Jan. 1,1776 the American Congress, composed of Delegates of the United Colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the counties of Newcastle, Kent and Sussex on Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina issued to Eliphalet King Gentleman a commission as Second Lieutenant of Captain Ebenezer Huntington's Third Company in the Twenty-Second Reg. of Foot, Commanded by Colonel

Samuel Wyllys, in the army of the United Colonies, raised for the defense of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile invasion thereof. The Commission was signed " By order of the Congress, John Hancock, President-- Attest Chas Thompson, Secy. January the first 1776"

Lt. King was with his Reg. before Boston when the British evacuated that city March 17,1776, and in April 1776 he marched with his Reg., under General Washington by the way of New London and the Sound to New York City and assisted in Fortifying that Place. On the 24th day of

August 1776, he went with his command to the front at Brooklyn, and on the 27 Aug. 1776 he was in the battle of Long Island where his Reg. suffered severely. His conduct in this Battle was such that shortly there-after in September 1776 he was promoted and made First Lt. of his

Company. On September first 1776 he was with his Reg. in its retreat from New York City, and after many minor engagements and skirmishes was on October 28th, 1776 in the Battle of White Plains. He thereafter remained with his Reg. in the vicinity of Peekiskill under General Heath.

The record of the military service of Eliphalet King both as Ensign in the 2nd Reg. Connecticut Line. And as LT in the 22nd Reg. of foot, Continental Army, will be found in a book published by the State of CT entitled "Record of Service of CT Men in the War of The Revolution" compiled by Authority of the General Assembly under direction of the Adjutant General of CT. Hartford, 1889 On pages 51-92-107-and 640 and in the same book the record of Eliphalet King's first Reg. the Second Connecticut Line is given at page 45 as follows, " second Reg. --General Spencer's--1775

" Reg. raised on first call for troops by the Legislature April-May 1775. Recruited mainly in present Middlesex County and Eastern parts of the colony. Marching to the camps around Boston it took post at Roxbury and served during the siege until expiration of term of service Dec.

1775. Detachments of officers and men engaged at the battle of Bunker Hill June 17, and in Arnold's Quebec expedition Sep-Dec 1775. Adopted as Continental in July. The Reg. was reorganized for service in 1776 under Col. Wylly's " In addition to the forgoing, the names of the officers and men are given and under " 10th Co. " at page 51 of the book appears the Following; " Captain Oliver Hanchett of Suffield, Lieutenant Samuel Wright of Suffield, Lieutenant Consider Williston, Ensign, Eliphalet King, of Suffield" As a Officer in the 22nd Reg. of foot the record of Eliphalet King can also be found in " Historical Register of Officers of Continental Army During the War of the Revolution by F.B. Heitman," Published in Washington, D.C. 1873.

The record of the 22nd Reg. of foot, Continental Army into which the 2nd CT. was merged and in which Eliphalet King became at first a 2nd LT. and after the battle of Long Island, a first LT. is also given fully in the book but the record of Eliphalet King in that Reg. as we give it here is we think a sufficient statement as to the general movements of that Reg. and the engagements in which it participated. The original commission of Eliphalet King as Ensign of the 2nd CT. Line, and the Original Commission as 2nd LT. in the 22nd Reg. of Foot Continental Army are now [1905] in the possession of Mr. Rufus James King [Grandson] of Dayton, Ohio and both with a silhouette of LT. Elephalet King with his old fashioned Queue hanging down his Back. Though an Officer, yet he bore a gun as well as his Sward. The gun he carried was captured from the British by him and evidently for that reason much prized. Perhaps he regarded it as a fair compensation for the gun he had lost to the British in the Arnold Expedition against

Quebec. The gun carefully preserved by Mr. Rufus King is an old English flintlock Musket, Brass mounted and upon the lock-plate is stamped." Vernon 1762". The Musket has a silver plate on its stock with the inscription " THIS MUSKET Captured at the opening of the American Revolution from the British tyrant George the Third was born and used in several battles by ELIPHALET KING of Suffield CT Ensign in the 2nd Reg. CT. Colony line and LT. in the 22nd Reg. of foot. And by him presented to his son Augustine King who presented it to his son Capt. Edward A. King of the 15th Reg. of infantry, U.S. Army December 1847". Captain Edward A. King, therein mentioned was a veteran officer in the Mexican war and afterward Col of the 6th Reg. of infantry, U.S Army, and also Col. of the 68th Indiana Volunteers. 72. LT. Roger KING War of 1812 was born on 16 Jan 1771 in Suffield, Hartford, CT.

He died on 15 Aug 1855 in Jonesville, Saratoga, NY.

Roger King removed from Suffield to Troy New York in 1794. It was then a small Village known as Vanderheyden, which was the same name of the patron, on whose lands it was located. Roger was one of a considerable number of New England men, mostly from CT. who came there about that time and by their energetic efforts and enterprise in the next few years built up a city of considerable importance. In May 1812 He was commissioned by Daniel D Tompkins Governor of the State of New York as Lt. in command of a Company of light infantry in the Reg. of Militia in the County of Rensselaer, whereof Adam Yates Esquire, is Lt. Col.

Commandant. The Reg. was called into active Service in the war of 1812 and ordered to proceed to Plattsburg on Lake Champlain; but hostilities in that region having ceased, it was not present in any engagements. LT. Roger King however promptly responded to his countries call with his Company. In 1820 almost the entire business portion of Troy was destroyed by fire and its recuperation seemed doubtful. Mr. King therefore, purchased a farm at Jonesville, Saratoga County NY. and with his family removed to it. His doing so produced one important result.

There was at that time nowhere in the vicinity any school of a higher grade than the district school, which was very elementary in its character. The younger 5 children having acquired all the education it could supply. Their further education could be accomplished only by sending all of them from home to some distant institution, unless some plan could be devised for obviating that necessity. Such a plan, with the aid of his wife he carried out. Competent teachers were employed and the school was opened in the family homestead for his children and also others, The school was a success and after a year he erected a separate building for classrooms. Soon there were 40 residents in the old homestead. He then purchased a 13-acre tract of land and erected a building for the school. When completed the school was transferred to its new location and a principal and adequate Faculty secured. Subsequently two large additional dormitories were erected on the grounds and the school and incorporated. It was called the Jonesville Academy. It grew to over 150 student including quite a number from other states. It met with remarkable success and in a brief time became a prominent educational institution. Among its graduates were many who afterwards attained prominence in the professions of law, and medicine, as well as in other pursuits, while one became a United States Senator. As an important factor in the early history of Troy, N.Y. as an officer in the army ready to serve in the defense of his country, and as founder of an important educational institution Mr. Roger King was a bright example of energy, patriotism and public spirit.

He was married to Anna GRANGER (daughter of Abner GRANGER Rev. War and Experience KING) on 4 Feb 1795 in Suffield, Hartford, CT. 1st wife.

Anna GRANGER was born on 8 May 1771 in Suffield, Hartford, CT.

She died on 12 Feb 1812 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY.

She was the niece of Gideon Granger, Postmaster General in President Jefferson's Cabinet

LT. Roger KING War of 1812 and Anna GRANGER had the following children:

107 i. Cornelia KING was born on 27 Jun 1796 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY.

She died on 17 Sep 1797 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY.

+108 ii. Louis KING

+109 iii. Myron KING

110 iv. Cornelia Ann KING was born on 20 Apr 1803 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY.

She died on 19 Dec 1820 in Buffalo, Erie, NY. Unmarried while visiting at the house of her uncle, Judge Erastus Granger.

When quite young she developed a taste and aptitude for art. A short time before her decease in 1820 she painted in watercolors a sketch of the Tibbit's mansion and grounds, located in what was then on the outskirts of Troy, NY but is now near its center. The mansion, which was of imposing dimensions, remains unchanged [1907] and it and the grounds are owned and occupied by the Day Home one of the most valuable charities in Troy. Miss King's picture of the old mansion and grounds was considered so excellent that an engraving thereof was made which is contained in Weiss History of Troy.

+111 v. Henry Augustine KING

112 vi. George KING was born on 2 Oct 1809 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY He died on 22 Apr 1810 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY.

He was married to Christina AURINGER (daughter of John Martin AURINGER and Mary BUYS) on 23 Jul 1812 in Troy, Rensselaer, NY 2nd Wife.

Christina AURINGER was born on 8 Jun 1785 in Troy, NY.

She was christened on 10 Jul 1785 in Gilead Evan. Lutheran Church Rensseler, NY. She died on 9 Feb 1872 in Jonesville, New York.

She and her descendants are of lineal descent of Roeloff and Annetje Jans, who came to Rensselaer lwyck from Holland in 1630 and settled first at Beaverwyck, now Albany, New York, but subsequently at New Amsterdam. Roeloff and Annetie Jans, Although she died more than two centuries ago, the name Annetje Jans continued to have a perment place in the colonial history of New York State by reason of their early connection with its first settlement as a colony under the auspices of the Dutch Government. Numerous references to them are found in the Histories of New Netherland, and of the Cities of New York and Albany. Their names also appear freqeuntly in the early colonial documents preserved in the archives of the State of New York and which have been compiled and published by authority of the Legislature of that State. Documentary History of the State of New York [4 volums] " Documents Relative to the Colonial History of the State of New York" [11 vol.] The name of Annetje Jans is especially familiar to the New York public by reason of its connection with the celebrated legal contests between some of her descendants and the corporation of Trinity Church in the city of New York for the possession of real estate which was hers at the time of her decease in 1663. A few years after her decease some, but not all of her heirs joined in a conveyance of the land in question to Col. Lovelace who was then Governor of the Province. Subsequently it was confiscated by Queen Ann who in 1703 presented it to the Church. From the several authorities referred to a consecutive and not

Uninteresting history of the family might be compiled.

His RELATION is 3rd G Grandfather of William M Worth.

He removed from Suffield soon after his marriage in 1795. Property records in Herkermer County NY show him and his wife there until about 1817 when he and Dorcas of the town of Litchfield, Herkermer County sold to Stephen Allen Mattison on April 1, 1817 [approx. 24 acres] portion of lot 99 of the Bayard patent for $300.00. Jonathan King purchased this land, Feb. 26, 1810. The 1800 census shows Jonathan one white male between 26-45 and one female between age 26-45 and one female under 10 years old. The 1810 census shows Jonathan with 3 males ages 1 to 10 one 10 to 18 and females one under 10 one 10 to 16 and his wife. After that the records of Hammond, St. Lawrence Co., NY show him there until his death. Venitah And Clive King Were the last King children Born in The Hotel, Farm House built By Jonathan King. In 1818 Jonathon and Dorcas Arrived in SO Hammond, NY and purchased a Large Farm on the Jefferson CO. Line. At this time the going price for land there was $5.00 per acre. There they built a large home and stagecoach stop. It was known as the King Inn and Hotel on the military RD.

The ballroom could hold 400 people for dancing. My Mother Venitah King was Born there and remembered the big Chandeliers and fancy furniture. IT was in the family for 4 generations, Jonathon, Henry, Henry Clinton, Myron Wallace, my Grandfather. The Inn was built by a rock ledge, and the rock was used to build it. At first it was used as a farm home and a place for stagecoaches to stop and change horses and spend the night. It was always used as a farm home but other uses over time were found. There were Weddings, Special Events Holiday Balls with bands and music. Jonathon was a Blacksmith, farmer and Innkeeper.

In 1833 he became the first postmaster of the SO. Hammond post office and his ANNUAL pay increased to $14.31 in late 1842 when his son Henry was Appointed. His annual pay increased to $19.33 in 1852 when the SO Hammond post office was closed and moved to Hammond.

In 1907 Myron Wallace unable to run the farm any longer due to asthma moved away to Syracuse and rented the farm out. In that same year the whole place burned due to tenants children playing with matches under a Hay wagon. All that was saved were the horses in the barn. Myron built a new home on the property and then sold it. I have pictures of the inn and other Doc. in my file the US postal archive records sent me copies of the appointments and pay schedule. From the Thousand Island Sun Newspaper Sunday 9 July 1964

" OLD KING TAVERN NEAR SOUTH HAMMOND RECALLED 4 -23-1937 by Ernest G Cook. Bruce Shindler now resides on place where Hotel Stood. South Hammond April 22.

An intrusting story is related by Bruce Shindler of the King Tavern of over a century ago.

Mrs. Shindler owns the old King place near South Hammond where one stood this noted hotel of its day. Mr. Shindlers story was supplemented by stories from neighbors and they weave themselves into a review of those days when 200 couples came on festive nights to dance on the long hall room floor in the tavern kept by the King's.

I'll show you right where the old tavern stood said Mr. Shindler. The historic building burned some 30 years ago when some children playing with matches started a fire under a wagon and the flames spread so rapidly that even some of the horses in the stable were lost. It was threshing time and the tenant on the farm, Carl Lennox, was busy with the press of extra farm work. It was in the fall of the year when everything was dry and a fire would spread quickly that the building burned. In spite of all efforts the entire set of buildings were destroyed and a landmark of the years was gone. It should be mentioned that the King Tavern was not exactly in South Hammond for the location is not far beyond the St. Lawrence County line as one drives north from Redwood on the present day State highway from Watertown to Ogdensburg.

[RT 37] In old days it was the Military Road and Jonathan King coming to the pioneer lands in 1819 picked his sight right under the sandstone ledge and began to quarry the stone to build his tavern. To day there is a limburger cheese factory almost across the road from the tavern site and what appears to be a farm road winds up to the ledge and disappears. But this road is actually a town highway and leads over to Calaboga highway at about where the Miller farm is located. Jonathan King was a progressive man and made his guests so comfortable and well fed that his business grew. He was a leader in that section and as business grew he enlarged the place. Mr. King actually opened his tavern in the year 1820, according to the opinion of several of the older people of Hammond. It is necessary to get the story from neighbors because after four generations of King's living on the place Myron King sold it in 1914 to Mr. Shindler. The family has departed from the north country with only a few descendants it is said living now in the central part of the state. In the year 1833 a post office was established in the tavern with Jonathan King as the first postmaster. They tell me said Mr. Shindler that by that year the stage was opening a new route right by the King tavern door. Previously the mail was carried north from Denmark to Carthage to North Wilna, thence

To Antwerp, through Rossie, Hammond and thence to Ogdensburg. On Jan 1 1833, a mail route was established. From Theresa to South Hammond and this extended to Hammond and Ogdensburg. The old plan was for a stage driver to blow his horn when about a quarter of a mile down the road and that brought the people to the tavern door when the stage stopped. The mailbag was then taken in and the South Hammond mail would be taken from the sack and the outgoing mail put in and the same sack carried on. First it was one round trip a week for the mail, but later it was three times a week and I guess it was daily after a time. Now right where that clump of small trees is growing is where one end of the tavern was located and way over there was the northern end about 100 feet. The barn was still on the northern end. The hotel was built of building stone, secured from this ledge. It was two stories high and had a porch upstairs as well as down. The ball room was large enough for 400 people to take part in the dances"

From the office of the post office General, from the National Archives record of appointment of postmasters 1832 to 1971, Jonathan King was appointed the first Postmaster at South Hammond, NY. On Jan 14, 1833 and served until Nov 9, 1842 when his son Henry was appointed.
