Their Story

History of the name Brokaw

John Brokaw (name was changed from Jan nmn Broucard on arrival in America) followed or went with his parents to Somerset County, New Jersey in 1702 where he married Sarah Teunis Van Middlesward. Sarah was the daughter of Jan Teunis Van Middlesward and Catherine Teunis Bogart. (see note#1)

On 15 July 1725, John and Sarah purchased from Peter Somans three thousand acres of land on the East side of the South Branch of the Raritan River. They settled there at Millstone and spent the rest of their lives farming, having and raising nine children.
