4. William BILBROUGH (James2, James1)1, Grandson. Born abt 1771 in Gildersome, Yks, Eng. William died in W. Riding Yorks. Eng., in Aug 1861; he was 90. Buried on 22 Aug 1861 in Old Chapel Independent, Morley, Yorkshire, England.11 Occupation: Clothier/Farmer.9

Was one of the first workers in Gildersome to start a "Sick Club" in 1798 to aid workers laid off work with sickness.9

I am not certain who the grandson William is. It can only be a son of Thomas or Edward since he is still called Bilbrough or an illegitimate child of one of the daughters. Thomas was in the USA so Edward seems a likely bet and there is a space where the birth can have been. 7

On 5 Sep 1796 when William was 25, he married Hannah HARGREAVES1, in St. Peters, Leeds, Eng. Born in 1774 in Leeds, Yks, Eng.9 Hannah died in Morley, Yks, Eng, in 1829; she was 55.9

1823 Baines Directory of Gildersome was named as a Maltster.
May 1813 was created a Trustee of Gildersome Baptist church....and again in 1848.
1812 Feb 7th.Subscribed 2 guineas towards enlarging the burial ground and repairing the chapel at Gildersome and again on Nov 3rd 1813 (2 guineas). 9

John married Elizabeth Brooks PRIESTLEY12, daughter of Brooks PRIESTLY & Elizabeth BLAKEY. Born in Oct 1780 in Bradford, W. Yorks. Elizabeth Brooks died aft 1819; she was 38.

A retired maltster lodging in the lodging house operated by Ann Ashton of 11 Cobden Place, Leeds in the 1881 census. Left a will appointing Joseph Brooks Priestley, druggist of Leeds and Alfred Bilbrough of Gildersome, gent, brothers and William Radford Bilbrough of Leeds, gent, nephew as executors. 7

In 1886 was described as a gentleman of Leeds. Was a Maltster9

6. James BILBROUGH (James2, James1)1, Grandson. Born on 21 Mar 1782 in Gildersome, Yks, Eng. At the age of <1, James was baptized in Batley, Yorks, Eng., on 10 Apr 1782.10 James died on 15 May 1847; he was 65. Occupation: Drysalter.9

May 1813 was created a Trustee of Gildersome Baptist church.Was a drysalter by trade.Subscribed 10 pounds towards the errection of a school at Gildersome in 1810. Also subscribed 5 guineas on Feb 7th 1812 for enlarging the burial ground and repairing the chapel at Gildersome. In 1818 was a member of a committee to sit and advise the Overseers of the Poor in Gildersome. Was a voter in 1835.....voting for Lord Morpeth. In Baines 1823 Directory was a Drysalter by trade. 9

In 1821(7th July) travelled to the USA on a visit with nephew Thomas Bilbrough on the ship 'Dido' from Liverpool. James was listed as a 'Merchant' and nephew Thomas as a farmer. Stayed only a short time.

James married Ellen Brooks PRIESTLY1, daughter of Brooks PRIESTLY & Jane JONES. Born in 1791 in Lancashire, ENG.9 Ellen Brooks died on 5 Apr 1865; she was 74.

Started the temperance cause in the Gildersome village and before the days of trained nurses helped wherever she could. When Park House estate was sold she left Gildersome & went to live at Chorlton on Medlock with her sister Mary in the 1881 Census.9
