Mary Doodes | see FAMILY TREE | |
Baptized: 14 Dec 1645 Amsterdam, Netherlands Married: Abt. 1663 Died: Aft. 1681 |
Maritje Meijnderts (or Meijnerts) was born and baptized in Amsterdam on 14 December 1645 Mary's father was born Meindert Doedes(z) in Holland. When he came here they accidentally wrote his name: "Minor Doodes". The name Meindert is pronounced: minor. Therefore technically Mary's actual last name was Meijnderts (patronymic), but in most documentation you will find her surname written: "Minor." |

A narrative from HGPM (1894 narrative on Peter Montague published by George W. Montague) incorrectly states this Peter married twice: 1) Mary Minor, then 2)Elizabeth Morris. - Middlesex Co, Order Book 2, p. 93 to wit: 'Estate of Peter Mountague granted to his relict, Mary Mountague, 1 Jan 1682.'

Meindert Doodes was Dutch. Per Dutch custom, the children acquired the
first name of the father for their surname. Meindert was anglicized to
Minor, thus daughter Mary became Mary Minor.

"Peter Mountague (1603-1659) was an active merchant in Virginia as his then deceased father and uncle had been in England. It may have been in connection with his merchant business with Holland that he first met the Sea Captain, Meindert Doodes, in Nansemond Co., Virginia. The two families of Mountague and Doodes (later transliterated to Minor) probably moved together in mid to late 1656 to Lancaster Co., Virginia, where Doodes Minor married Elizabeth Mountague around 1671 and Peter Mountague (ca. 1638ca. 1682) married Mary Minor by 1665."
