Marytje Dorland

Marytje was probably born about 1675 since she and Gerret Dorland were baptizing their first child in 1695.  There are several baptismal records that make us believe that her maiden name was Dorland and she was the daughter of Jan Gerretse Dorland and Annetje Remsen.  The baptisms of three of her children have witnesses from the family of Jan Gerretse Dorland.  The witness at the baptism of Harmtje in 1695 was Rem Dorland. (1) Her daughter Annetje in 1704 has Jan Dorlandt as a witness. (2) And Lena in 1714 has Rych Hendricks as a witness. He was married to Jannetje Dorland. (3)
Additional evidence comes from two more baptismal records.  Geertie Dorland, a daughter of Jan Gerretse Dorland, was married to Abraham Lott. She died and Abraham remarried to a Sarah.  When Abraham Lott baptized his child Jacob on 21 Jun 1716, "Marytje Dorlandt" was a witness. (4) She had probably been very helpful to him after the death of her sister, Geertie.  Another brother, Jan Dorland, also died young. He had a son Jan Dorland baptized 27 Jul 1701. When this son Jan, born 1701, had his first child, Marretie, baptized 28 Mar 1724, "Gerrit Dorland and Marretie Dorland" were witnesses. (5) Again Marytje may have been instrumental in raising of young Jan, born 1701, after the death of his father, Jan Dorland, her brother.
All this plus the naming patterns of her children strongly indicate that the parents of Marytje were Jan Gerretse Dorland and Annatje Remsen. (6)
Marytje moved with her family to Somerset Co. NJ sometime after 1715.  She was a member of the Harlingen Church. "In 1750 Mary was not listed, but as Harmtje (Marytje's oldest child) was allotted two seats, one was probably for her mother.  She sold one in 1751 to John Simonson, her sister Lena's husband, also known as John Van Arsdalen.  This may have been because her mother had died." A sidelight is the probable identification of Mary, wife of Gerrit3 Dorland (Lambert2, Jan1), as an undocumented daughter of Jan3 Dorland (Gerrit2, Jan1) and Annetje Remsen, as referred to above.  This identification is based on her name given as Mary Dorland in the baptism of her daughter, Harmtje, the witnesses at baptisms of her children and the baptisms for whom she served as a witness, and the naming of their children.

1) Baptismal records of the Reformed Dutch Churches typically used women's maiden names, rather than their married names.  At times the married name was used, but typically it was consistently one way or the other over a period of time, possibly depending on whom made the record.  The baptismal records at Brooklyn in 1695, when Mary's first daughter, Harmtje, was baptized, consistently used the mother's maiden name, in this case, Dorland.

2) Naming of their children after immediate family members:
Harmtje, after her paternal grandmother, Hermina Pieters
Jannetje, after her maternal aunt, Jannetje Dorland
Jan, after his maternal grandfather, Jan Dorland
Annetje, after her maternal grandmother, Annetje Remsen
Lambert, after his paternal grandfather, Lambert Dorland
Gerrit, after his father
Abraham, after his maternal uncle, Abraham Dorland
Lena, after her paternal aunt, Magdalena Dorland

In 1750 Mary was not listed, but as Harmtje was allotted two seats, one was probably for her mother.  She sold one in 1751 to John Simonson, her sister Lena's husband, also known as John Van Arsdalen.  This may have been because her mother had died. Harmtje was holder of only the 5th place in pew number 12, in 1752. Gerrit and Lambert are the only Dorlandts to appears on the 1753 list of freeholders.
